BCE Bearmail 8/24/18

August 24, 2018

Dear BCE Families,

Welcome Back! ~ We're off to a great start and 2018-2019 promises to be another outstanding school year here at BCE. It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Principal's Coffee on Monday. We have such a great community to support our students here at Boulder Creek Elementary. I'm looking forward to working together this year as we support our amazing BCE Bears!

Good News! ~ As a result of an unexpected increase in enrollment, we are excited to announce that we will be adding a new teacher to our BCE staff!  Mr. Marc Koenig, who worked with us last year, will be returning to our campus.  The addition of a new teacher will slightly reduce our class size in most grade levels.

The restructuring will include a new 4th grade class, the addition of a 3rd/4th combo class and changing our current 2nd/3rd combination to a straight 2nd grade class.  At this moment, in all but 2 of our classes, there will need to be changes in placement for students.  Our staff will take great care to formulate class assignments, and will follow the same criteria we used before the school year started to create balanced classes.

Transitions can be challenging and we are fortunate to have the experienced and talented staff that has made Boulder Creek Elementary such an excellent school experience for our students.  These factors will greatly support the transition of students into their new classrooms.

Parents will be notified by email and/or telephone by the end of the day on Tuesday that their student will be changing class.  Additionally, a note confirming the change will be sent home with students as well as mailed to home.  Students will start in their new classes on Thursday.

Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation during this time of transition.  Your student will take their lead from you and your positivity and encouragement will make a difference.

Superintendent's Letter ~ Please click here to read a letter from our Superintendent.

Perseverance ~ At BCE our overarching theme this year is perseverance.  As a school community we will be learning about perseverance and recognizing acts that demonstrate perseverance.  Every month each class will receive a new picture book that can be used to discuss perseverance.  Classes received a preview of their first book at an assembly on Wednesday.  I had the opportunity to share Kathleen Krull's book Wilma Unlimited, How Wilma Rudolph Became the World's Fastest Woman to all of our classes.  I'm sure this book is available at the library in town if you'd like to check it out and share the experience with your student.

Safety ~ Please help us keep our kids safe.  Unless you have a handicap placard, please do not drive onto campus.  Additionally, please do not walk across the parking lot and most importantly, please listen to and follow the directions of our crossing guards. We are all working together to keep our students safe and provide a good example for them.

Thank you for your cooperation in this very important matter.

Current Student Information ~ It's been a great first week of school.  Thank you for updating your student's information in PowerSchool.  It's important that we have up to date contact and medical information for each student.  If you have not updated your student's registration information for the 2018-19 school year, please go to our District website (slvusd.org) and follow the links for student registration.  Having current, up to date information is essential for us to be able to contact you to support your student or reach you in case of an emergency.

Perseverance Quote of the Week:

"You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated.  In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it."

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school and being on time every day!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we continue to have assemblies and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. BCE has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

BCE PARENT CLUB EVENT & MEETING REMINDERS:

Welcome new and returning families!  Did you know that you are all a part of the BCE Parent Club just by having a student enrolled at this school?  That doesn't mean you have to come to every meeting or help with every event.  The Parent Club mission is twofold:  first and foremost, we provide fun family events throughout the school year. Secondly, we are dedicated to fundraising to help provide financial support to programs such as Learning Garden and Art Masterpiece. You can be involved with as many programs and events as you like. Our annual Calendar will be distributed in September in order to help you plan to be a part of the events happening throughout the school year.

Last night was our first meeting of the year. Our meetings usually take place on the second Thursday of the month from 6-8 PM. Our next meeting will be Thursday, September 13th in the MP Room. Can't make it to a meeting? That's okay! There are so many events you can be a part of! Our Fall fundraiser is the Drive for School Raffle Tickets. 100% of profits go to the school! It is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year. Our September family event is the Ice Cream Social. Details to come at Back To School Night and future Bearmails.

If you have a question and would like to get in touch with our Board members please e-mail us at bcepc.execs@gmail.com. We also have a secret Facebook group. Contact us if you would like to be added.

If you haven't joined our Facebook Group, and would like to, you can sign-up by sending an email to bcepc.execs@gmail.com.  This is a private group so members must be invited and have a student enrolled at BCE.  It is a great forum to ask questions, receive announcements and stay involved.

BCE Principal's Newsletter 8/13/18

BOULDER CREEK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Principal's Newsletter

August 13, 2018

Hello BCE Families!

I hope you all had a wonderful summer and were able to spend some quality time with those special kids!  BCE is an amazing school and I am looking forward to continuing our work together this year.

Our staff members have been working hard to get things ready for our students and everyone is excited for our first day of school Monday, August 20.  I would like to acknowledge all our staff members who took time out of their summer to enhance your student's learning experience.  Many teachers attended the math institute up at UCSC, others attended the Santa Cruz County math institute led by SVMI, and one of our teachers was able to go back to New York for a week long training at Teachers' College!  Additionally, many of our staff members used their own time to meet with colleagues to plan and prepare for the new school year.

I want to extend a warm welcome to our new staff members and to thank everyone who has supported them in their transition.  We want to welcome Lisa Benavidez back home to BCE!  Lisa will be joining our 3rd grade team this year.  We are also fortunate to have Adam Keasey joining our 5th grade team, Alyson Paolini who will be joining our staff as our Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), and Severin Steinmann will be our Psychologist.  I would like to congratulate one of our 1st grade teachers on her summer wedding - Haley Eggleston is now Haley Foster!  Last, but not least, Ivan Bibriesca has been hired as our senior custodian and will be here to help get our campus ready for our students.
