BCE Bearmail 10/28/16

                October 28, 2016

Dear BCE Families,

Halloween - There are a few guidelines regarding costumes.  Costumes should be in good taste and safely constructed so that they do not interfere with regular class activities.  Gruesome costumes and bloody, fake wounds are not appropriate for an elementary school.  Weapons (including fakes), skateboards and roller blades are not allowed as part of costumes.   If you are unsure, please contact your child's teacher or the office before purchasing the costume.  The Halloween Parade is slated for Monday, October 31 at 9:00 am on the upper playground.

Halloween Hunger? ~ Our own Boulder Creek Fire Department will be selling hot dogs and chili on Monday night.  These delicious treats will be available between 5 pm and 7 pm (trick or treat time) at the fire house. Proceeds will be split between BCE (5th grade Science Camp fund) and SLV Seniors. Thank you for your support BCFD!

Bryan Stow ~ Our TK, K and 1st grade students were treated to an assembly on Thursday presented by Bryan Stow.  Bryan spoke to our students about the importance of being an upstander not a bystander, how to lead by example and how to help people lead kinder lives. For more information about Brian Stow and his inspiring journey please visit: www.bryanstowfoundation.org.  We are in the process of planning a similar assembly for the older students.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony ~ On Tuesday morning there was a small ribbon cutting ceremony on Laurel Street to celebrate the completion of the construction in front of BCE and the Safe Route to School project.  Superintendent Bruton, together with three of our school board members and representatives from the Department of Public Works, joined Santa Cruz County Supervisor Bruce McPherson in dedicating the new safety features on Laurel Street to the health and welfare of the current and future students at Boulder Creek Elementary.  Everyone in attendance mentioned their gratitude for the patience and flexibility of our BCE families.  Thanks to all who worked so hard to get this important upgrade completed!

Parent Club ~ I hope you are able join me at our BCE Parent Club meeting on Thursday evening at 6:30 pm in the BCE Library.  We will be joined by our superintendent, Dr. Laurie Bruton, who will be sharing with us her "State of the District" presentation.  As parents and guardians of BCE students you are automatically a member of the BCE Parent Club.  Our parent club provides fun family nights and organizes fundraising events that support our BCE Bears.  I hope you can join us on Thursday and, as always, childcare will be provided.

Check It Out! ~ Have you noticed our new bulletin board located near the office?  We are recognizing all our students who have perfect attendance each month.

Important Calendar Information ~ Just a reminder that Family Conferences are the week of November 14 – 18 and we will be on a minimum day schedule.  TK and kindergarten will be dismissed at 11:50, 1st – 3rd will be dismissed at 12:10 pm and 4th and 5th graders will be dismissed at 12:15 pm.

Once again our Thanksgiving Break is a week long.  There will be no school the week of November 21 – 25.

BCE Bearmail 10/21/16

October 21, 2016

Dear BCE Families,

Math Night Cancelled ~ Unfortunately, we've had to cancel the math night planned for next Tuesday evening.  We plan to reschedule and will let you know the details as soon as they are finalized.  I'm sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

News Just In ~ Boulder Creek Elementary is the recipient of the 2016 Valley Press Banner Public School Rave Award!  We are very proud of our school.  Thank you to all who voted.

The Great California Shake Out ~ As you may have heard from your student, on Thursday BCE joined schools throughout California to participate in the Great California Shake Out.  On 10/20 at 10:20, students participated in an earthquake drill.  They learned to duck, cover and hold and then practiced leaving the classroom in an orderly manner.  Our BCE Bears did a great job; I'm so very proud of them!

Drive for Schools ~ The Drive for Schools fundraiser is over and now the wait is on!  Sunday is the drawing down at the Boardwalk for the grand prize of a new Toyota Prius or $25,000!  I hope one of our BCE families is the recipient of good news this weekend!  Many thanks to Tammy Schultz and company for making this such a successful event!

The Halloween Parade is slated for Monday, October 31st at 9:00 am on the upper playground.

Road Update ~ Laurel Street is now open and the final touches are being put in place.  With the parking spaces now being identified on the left side of the road, there is NO PARKING on the right side of Laurel.  Thank you for keeping or students and community safe.

Free Carbon Monoxide Alarms ~ Boulder Creek Fire District is happy to announce that we have a number of Carbon Monoxide Alarms we would like to pass along to families who are in need of one, free of charge! We have a limited number on hand; therefore this is on a first come first serve biases. Please send an e-mail to pvickers@bcfd.com to get further details.

Donations needed ~ We are in need of children's clothing in small to medium sizes.  Our most significant need is for easy to pull on pants and leggings.  We are also in need of small to medium underwear.  We have children coming in to the office who need a change due to an accident or a slip in the mud.  It is a much less embarrassing situation for our students if we can provide them with replacement clothes that fit them. Thank you for your generosity.

Playground Closed ~ Just a reminder that our playgrounds are closed until 8:10 am when a staff member arrives to supervise students.  Students arriving before 8:10 may wait in the office or join students for breakfast in the MP.  Unfortunately, we cannot have parents supervising students without a staff member being present.  Thank you for your understanding and help in keeping all our kids safe.

Important Calendar Information ~ Just a reminder that Family Conferences are the week of November 14 – 18 and we will be on a minimum day schedule.  Kindergarten will be dismissed at 11:50, 1st – 3rd will be dismissed at 12:10 and 4th and 5th graders will be dismissed at 12:15 pm.

Special BCE Bearmail - Family Dinner Night Tonight!

October 12, 2016

Dear BCE Families,

Don't miss tonight's Family Dinner Night at the fabulous Edo's Sushi from 5 pm to 9 pm. Grab a delicious dinner and bask in your awesomeness, knowing that 20% of your meal purchase is benefiting 4th grade.

In addition, please stop by our Drive For Schools table outside the 3rd grade rooms in the morning or head into the office to grab your Drive For Schools tickets, to turn in your filled-out tickets, or to pick up additional tickets to sell. Due to current sales and the possibility of not reaching our goal, we are extending our due date to Monday, October 17 at 9 am. We are only at 50% of our target, so BCE is really counting on your support in these next few days!  Let's get a BCE parent in a brand new car or in a pile of $25,000!

Last, but not least, we'll see you in the Multi-purpose room this Thursday at 6:30 pm for the Parents Club meeting!  Of course, childcare will be provided.

BCE Bearmail 10/7/16

October 7, 2016

Dear BCE Families,

No School ~ Just a reminder that there is NO SCHOOL on MONDAY.  It is a Professional Learning Day and our teachers will be busy advancing their skills in Reading Workshop.

Road Status ~ Thank you for your patience as we near the end of the road construction in front of the school.  It's almost complete and we will soon enjoy the benefits of sidewalks, a safe drop-off area and extra parking.

Appreciation ~ We received a lovely call in the office this week from a parent who noticed another parent giving one of our staff members a hard time as she was directing traffic before school.  The caller wanted us to know how much she appreciated the work of our staff members who are keeping our students safe.  Many thanks to all of you who follow the directions of our staff members who are doing their best to protect our students in a very challenging situation.

Volunteer Sign-up Days ~ Thank you so much for those of you who were able to make it to the two Volunteer Sign-up Days that were held at BCE.  If you were not able to make it, there will be two days next week to take advantage of.  On Tuesday, October 11 from 10:00 - 12:00 in the HR office or on Wednesday, October 12 from 8:15 - 9:45 in the cafeteria of our Tri-Campus, you are invited to drop by and begin the process of becoming one of our approved volunteers.  Thank you for volunteering your time to support our BCE family!

Trading Cards ~ Please let your student know that trading cards (Pokemon, magic cards, etc.) are not allowed at school.  Students may not play with or trade cards during the school day.  We have had too many issues with students who are selling cards for cash or students being persuaded into trading cards.

Playground Closed ~ Just a reminder that our playgrounds are closed until 8:10 am when a staff member arrives to supervise students.  Students arriving before 8:10 am may wait in the office or join students for breakfast in the MP.  Unfortunately, we cannot have parents supervising students without a staff member being present.  Thank you for your understanding and help in keeping all our kids safe.

GATE Parent Meeting ~ Please click here to see a flyer containing information about an upcoming GATE Parent Advisory meeting.

There are a few guidelines regarding costumes.  Costumes should be in good taste and safely constructed so that they do not interfere with regular class activities.  Gruesome costumes and bloody, fake wounds are not appropriate for an elementary school.  Weapons (including fakes), skateboards and roller blades are not allowed as part of costumes.   If you are unsure, please contact your child's teacher or the office before purchasing the costume

Drive for Schools ~ Would you like to win a car or $25,000 and support BCE?  Raffle tickets are $5.00 each or a book of 6 for $25.00.  Tickets will be available in the BCE office through October 12.  100% of the proceeds from these raffle tickets support BCE!  Thank you for supporting our students!

"When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on."

Did you know???

Attendance matters as early as kindergarten.  Studies show many children who miss too many days in kindergarten and first grade can struggle academically in later years.  They often have trouble mastering reading by the end of 3rd grade.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!
