BCE Bearmail 5/30/14

May 30, 2014

Dear BCE Families,

The Emperor's New Clothes ~ Bravo to Ms. Foxworthy's and Ms. Egbert's class for working so hard on their production.  The singing and dancing was awesome and their hard work was evident throughout the production.

Kindergarten Performance ~ Our kindergartners also put on a wonderful show this week.  If you ever want to smile until your cheeks hurt and wipe away a few tears of pure joy, be sure to catch the next year's performance!

4th & 5th grade Music ~ Not to be outdone, our 4th and 5th graders delighted and amazed their audience as they entertained us this week with ukuleles, various percussion instruments, and their own lovely voices.  A special thank you to Carey Liston, our wonderful music teacher, for putting together our Spring Music Concert.

Math Contest Correction  ~ In last week's Bearmail we misspelled one of our winner's names - apologies to Cadie Peters!

Lost & Found ~ The lost and found pile continues to grow!  Please come by and take a look to see if anything belongs to your student.  Any items left after the last day of school will be donated to charity.

End of year ~ As the end of the year approaches we can feel the summer energy increase.  Please help your student make the most of these last days of school by keeping to a routine as much as possible and reminding them how important their job as a student is.

Library ~ The BCE library is closed for the school year.  Please return any library books your student may still have. Payment for lost or damaged books can be made in the office.  Thank you!

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Safety Tip of the Week:

BCE Carnival ~ Another successful Carnival and Silent Auction is behind us!  What a fun and exciting day it was.  Thank you to our families who attended the Carnival and bid on items from the Silent Auction and a big THANK YOU goes out to all our families who donated their time and energies to working before during and after the big day to make it such a success.

Family Surveys ~ Today is the final day to complete our Family Survey so if you have not done so already, please go ahead and take 5 minutes to help us.  The information we get from the survey results is very important and allows us to refine what we do to better support our students and their families.  Attached you will find a link to complete the survey online; additionally we have hard copies available in the office.  THANK YOU!

SLV Water District Grant ~ We are the proud recipients of the Classic Watershed Education Grant from our own SLV Water District.  This generous grant will provide full and partial scholarships for our 5th graders attending Science Camp.  Thank you Dusty Gipson for writing the grant and presenting the proposal to the Water Board.

Dear BCE Families,

BCE Carnival ~ It should be much cooler this weekend and I plan on spending the day at our Carnival and Silent Auction!  I hope you are able to join me at this fun event tomorrow.

Family Surveys ~ If you have not done so, please complete our family survey.  The information we get from them is very important and allows us to refine what we do to better support our students and their families.  Attached you will find a link to complete the survey online; additionally we have hard copies available in the office.  THANK YOU!

The link to the survey will be open through Friday, May 23, 2014.

Good News! ~ BCE has again been selected by the Cotsen Art of Teaching program to participate in their two year mentoring program.  Seven of our teachers have been selected to be Cotsen fellows.  Over the course of the two years they will work closely with their Cotsen mentor for an extraordinary professional development opportunity.

Congratulations! ~ BCE's own Colleen Murata (3rd grade) has had her poem,
In the Morning, published by Creative Communication: A Celebration of Poets. She entered their Spring Poetry Contest 2014.  Congratulations Colleen, we're so proud of you!

Support BCE ~ Just a reminder that there are several ongoing opportunities to support our fine, fine school.  We collect Box Tops for Education all year long.  If you sign up for the Smile Amazon program a percentage of your sale will be donated to BCE and finally, you can sign up for the escript program.  For additional information on all of these great programs please visit our Parent Club web site.

  • Monday 6/16 = Parent Club Meeting at 6:30in the BCE Library

Attendance Facts:

Missing class in elementary school sets the stage for problems later. If students are absent or tardy it is often difficult for them to stay at grade level. Students who don't read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely to become high school dropouts.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Safety Tip of the Week:

As long hot days of summer approach, please encourage your students to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen. Just a reminder that while hats can't be worn in class, we encourage our students to wear hats as sun protection when they are outside.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

BCE Bearmail 5/2/14

May 2, 2014

Dear BCE Families,

Amazing Volunteers! ~ I'd like to take this opportunity to thank ALL of our BCE volunteers.  I've been able to have a broader perspective this year and am so in awe and appreciative of all the work you do.  Our volunteers work inside the classroom with students, you work at home supporting teachers, drive and chaperone on field trips, shop for and provide breakfast to any student who needs it, organize and support carnivals, family nights, fundraisers and the list goes on and on.

We all love BCE and our family volunteers are such an important part of our success!  Thank you for all you do everyday!

To our 5th grade families, you will be missed, but your generosity will never be forgotten.  The Middle School is lucky to have you join their school community.

I'd also like to thank all of our staff members who planned & organized another successful Volunteer Luncheon.

Student Author Fair ~ Please join me, and many of our staff members, tomorrow at the Capitola Mall. Many classes at BCE will be participating in the Student Author Fair at Capitola Mall. Student books will be on display from 10:00 – 4:30 and there is an opportunity for students to read their book aloud to the visitors. Hope to see you there!

2014 Incoming 6th Grade Parent Night

Tuesday, May 13, 6:00 pm

Incoming Sixth-Grade Parent Night will be held on Tuesday, May 13 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Middle School Gym.

Parents of current Fifth-Grade students are invited to come for an informative presentation on the SLVMS Sixth-Grade program and school-wide opportunities for students.

Up Coming Dates to Remember

  • Wednesday 5/14 – BCE Open House & Art Show
  • Saturday 5/17 = BCE Carnival & Silent Auction
  • Wednesday 6/11 = NO Early Out, regular dismissal time
  • Thursday 6/12 = Last Day of school (12:15 Dismissal for grades 1 – 5)

Attendance Facts:

There is a direct correlation between good attendance in kindergarten and 1st grade and academic success in 3rd grade.  Students can become at risk by missing nine days during their kindergarten and first grade years.  The risk of the absences negatively impacting their achievement become high when students miss 18 or more days in each of those two years.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Safety Tip of the Week:
