BCE Bearmail 12/18/15

December 18, 2015

Dear BCE Families,

Happy Holidays! ~ As we say good-bye to 2015 I want to wish all our BCE families and friends a wonderful Winter Break. I hope you are able to spend some extra quality time with your extra special students!  I'm looking forward to seeing you all back in 2016 and continuing our important work together.

Joy ~ If you have a kindergartner or first grader I hope you were able to make it to their holiday singing performances this week.  If you had the opportunity to see those bright shiny faces and hear their beautiful singing, you know the meaning and feeling of joy!

Bear Wear ~ Just to give you a heads up, you will soon have the opportunity to order BCE Bear Wear again!  Order forms will go home on Monday January 11th for t-shirts and sweatshirts.  An IOU for a wonderful for BCE Bear Wear might be a great gift from Santa?

PLEASE note that Winter Break this year runs from December 21st through January 4th.  That means that school will not resume until Tuesday January 5th.

Up Coming Dates to Remember

  • 12/21 – 1/4 = Winter Break (Please note that students will return to school on Tuesday January 5th)

Quote of the Week (Service):

" Your life is worth more when you share it with others."

~ Author Unknown

Did you know???

Researchers have consistently found that families that engage in frequent traditions report stronger connection and unity than families that haven't established rituals together.  I hope you and your children are able to continue to create memorable holiday traditions.

Update ~ Some of your students may have seen an ambulance on campus today.  One of our students was hit on the head by a PE ball.  He fell to the ground and seemed a bit woozy so erring on the side of caution, we called 911.  The good news is that all is well and he is off with his family to enjoy the long holiday break.  Thank you for your understanding and compassion!

Wishing you all a wonderful Winter Break!

BCE Bearmail 12/11/15

December 11, 2015

Dear BCE Families,

THANK YOU ~ Thank you all for your generous donations to the Gift Shift and the Canned Food Drive!  What a great example of kindness and compassion you are for our students.  I had a delightful morning of being with students at the Gift Shift.  The smiles on their faces and the joy they had when they left with gifts for their loved ones are truly the spirit of the holiday!

Bryan Stow ~ On Thursday your students had the opportunity to participate in a wonderful and inspiring assembly with Bryan Stow.  Bryan is the Giants fan who was brutally beaten several years ago by two Dodger fans after a baseball game.  Bryan has made a remarkable recovery and came to BCE to talk about his story and about living a bully free life.  If you haven't had the chance to talk to your student about their impressions, please take a moment to do so.  I imagine most of them found it as inspirational as I did.

I would also like to mention the Bryan Stow Foundation (

ryanstowfoundation.org).  The foundation offers assemblies free of charge, but raises money to pay for travel expenses.  While Bryan's talks have been focused in the local and Bay Area, the hope is to bring his important mission to other parts of the state and country.  Please visit the web site for more information about Bryan's story and ways that you can support spreading his message.

Bell Choir ~ I had the pleasure of attending our School Board meeting on Thursday evening and enjoying a lovely performance by the BCE/SLE Bell Choir.  What a treat to be able to enjoy beautiful music, the happy faces of children and the proud faces of their families!  Many thanks to our amazing music teacher Carey Liston for making the concert possible.

Stormy Weather ~ We made it through this recent batch of rough weather and know more will be on the way soon.  Please make sure we have current contact information for you as well as a complete list of emergency contacts.  With the possibility of road closures please consider having an emergency contact on both the north and south side of BCE.  While your students will be safe here at school, we know they'll be more comfortable with a friend or family member.

Did you know???

Missing 2 weeks of class time each year in primary school means a total of 14 weeks teaching time missed— this could have a real impact on their basic literacy and math skills.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!
