BCE Bearmail 9/26/14

September 26, 2014

Dear BCE Families,

Hope to See You! ~ I hope to see many of you at the Ice Cream Social next Friday (5-7pm).  This is always a fun event and a good way to touch base with friends and our BCE community.  Remember the first scoop is free for BCE students!

Thank You ~ Many thanks to all of you who came down to SLE on Monday evening for our CGI Parent Night. There were more than fifty parents in attendance for the evening that included a lot of good information, activities, and thoughtful questions.  Your support of your student's education is invaluable!

College & Career Readiness ~ As I mentioned at Back to School Night, one of the goals we have as a School District is to make sure all our students are college and career ready. At BCE we want to support our students to be ready for any future they can dream of!  They don't need to decide in 2nd grade what college they want to go to or what career path they want to follow, but when the time comes we want them to be prepared academically and socially to pursue their goals.

Helping Children ~ Please click on the "Links" tab at the top of the BCE website and click on the "Helping Children Newsletter" This informative newsletter is sponsored by our Parent Club and each moth provides new and interesting articles as well as advice to families with young children.

Up Coming Dates to Remember

  • Friday 10/3 = Ice Cream Social, 5pm – 7pm
  • Friday 10/17 = Walk-Jog-athon
  • Thursday 10/30 = BCE Halloween Parade
  • Friday 10/31 = No School (Teacher Work Day)

Attendance Facts:

Just a reminder that our attendance line is available 24 hours a day.  Please call 338-2887 anytime of the day or night if your student is ill and will be absent from school.  A call needs to be made to BCE each day the student is absent, even if they are consecutive.  THANK YOU!

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Safety Tip of the Week:

Please model the BCE Way for your students by walking around the front parking lot rather than through it.  With our limited space and cars needing to access Disabled Parking at the front of the school, we are working hard to keep all students safe by reminding them to never cut through the parking lot.  Thank you for helping keep all our students' safe.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

A Message from Student Nutritional Services (SNS)

On our website www.slvusdcafe.com our monthly menus are posted along with all our nutritional information.  Please check your students account online at www.myschoolbucks.com.  You can set up automatic low balance reminders.  Our policy for negative balances is once a student reaches three meal charges, he/she will no longer be allowed to charge until his/her account is paid in full.   After the three meal charges and students still have not paid on their account we will provide them with a courtesy meal.  The courtesy meal includes milk, fruit, vegetable and cheese sticks or yogurt. We do not give them the main entrĂ©e.  When your student brings in money to add to their account, the negative balance will be cleared before any payment is recorded.  Negative balance letters are sent home on a regular basis when your student owes money.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please give me a call at 335-5384.

Up Coming Dates to Remember

  • Thursday 9/18 = Back to School Night
  • Monday 2/22 = Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) Parent Information Night,   SLE Multi Purpose Room, 6:30 – 8:00
  • Tuesday 9/23 = School Picture Day
  • Friday 10/31 = No School (Teacher Work Day)

Attendance Facts:

Thank you so much for getting your students to school, and on time, every day!  There is a high correlation between student achievement and attendance.  Last year almost 20% of our students were absent for ten or more days and approximately 35% of our students were tardy ten or more days. Additionally, we have many students who lose important instructional time when they leave school early.   As you can see, that adds up to a lot of missed instructional time.  Good attendance is important for your student's success.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Safety Tip of the Week:

Please make sure we have current contact information for you and for all the people authorized to pick up your student.   Multiple times every week we try to get in touch with families for various reasons and find that phone numbers are disconnected or voice mailboxes are full.  Having current contact information is critical for us to be able to get in touch with you quickly should the need arise.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

BCE PARENTS CLUB EVENT & MEETING REMINDERS:

Thank you for coming out this last Wednesday and supporting our first Family Dinner Night at the Boulder Creek Pizza & Pub. Karaoke fun was enjoyed by all, and it looks like BCE has a lot of talented students. 20% of the nights proceeds will benefit our music program.

An eScrip form was sent home with our welcome letter. Please consider signing up. Let the shopping you do anyway, benefit the education of your child.

The famous Ice Cream Social is coming to BCE on October 3rd. 5th graders will be serving up some of the best ice cream on the planet right here on the uppers playground. You won't want to miss this social event of the season. The first scoop is free for students and any additional scoops are 50 cents.

BCE Bearmail 9/5/14

September 5, 2014

Dear BCE Families,

Survey Results ~ From time to time I'll be sharing some of the results we received from the BCE Family Survey we sent out last Spring.  We appreciate the information we receive from this survey and will continue to grow and develop our programs here at BCE.  In response to the question, "My child receives quality instruction at BCE in Reading", 96% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed.  In "Writing", 97% agreed or strongly agreed; in "Mathematics" 93%; "Visual and Performing Arts" 75%; "Physical Education" 89%; "Science" 83%; "Technology" 81%.

Parking and Traffic ~ Thank you for being patient and following the directions of our staff as they direct traffic and crosswalks.  Their primary job is to keep our students safe as they arrive and depart school.  Please remember that there is no parking on Laurel Street on the hill as you get closer to campus.  There are actually "No Parking" signs hidden in the hedge.  The roadway is too narrow to allow parking on either side.

Current Student Information ~ Thank you for updating your student's information in InfoSnap.  It's important that we have up to date contact and medical information for each student.

Site Council ~ Our Site Council plays an important role at BCE. The school site council is a group of teachers, parents and classified employees that work with the principal to develop, review and evaluate school improvement programs and school budgets.

If you are interested in serving on the Site Council for the 2014-15 school year, please complete the attached application and return it to Margaret Zavaroni in our office no later than Friday September 19th.

  • Thursday 9/18 = Back to School Night
  • Tuesday 9/23 = School Picture Day
  • Friday 10/3 = Ice Cream Social
  • Friday 10/31 = No School (Teacher Work Day)

Attendance Facts:

Attendance will continue to be an important area of focus for us this year.  We were able to bring our attendance rate up slightly last year and we need to continue that hard work to ensure that all our students receive the short and long term benefits of consistent school attendance.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Safety Tip of the Week:

If you are waiting for a 4th or 5th grade students to be dismissed at the end of the day, please supervise any younger children that may be with you.
