BCE Bearmail 12/12/14

December 12, 2014

Dear BCE Families,

THANK YOU ~ Thank you all for your generous donations to the Gift Shift and the Canned Food Drive!  What a great example of kindness and compassion you are for our students.  I had a delightful morning of bringing students to the Gift Shift.  The smiles on their faces and the joy they had when they left with gifts for loved ones are truly the spirit of the holiday!

Stormy Weather ~ We made it through this past batch of rough weather and know more will be on the way soon.  Please make sure we have current contact information for you as well as a complete list of emergency contacts - email Heather Chinello (hchinello@slvusd.org) with updates.  With the possibility of road closures please consider having an emergency contact on both the north and south side of BCE.  While your students will be safe here at school, we know they'll be more comfortable with a friend or family member.

PLEASE note that Winter Break this year runs from December 22nd through January 5th.  That means that school will not resume until Tuesday January 6th.

Up Coming Dates to Remember

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Safety Tip of the Week: Please be aware of the bus zones and help us keep the lanes open for the safety of our students and to allow the busses to arrive and leave on time

Special BCE Bearmail 12/9/14 - Important Information

December 9, 2014

Dear BCE Families,

The current weather conditions bring many questions about student safety and procedures.  Here are a few reminders:

School Closures

·         An "all-call" through our School Messenger automated system will apprise families of the closure on the number that you have listed as your home phone number only.

·         It is helpful if a phone at your home is not portable in case of a power outage.

·         School closures are also broadcast on KSCO AM 1080 on your radio.

Disaster Procedures

In case of a natural disaster (earthquake, flood, etc.) the following procedures will be used to help us unite you and your child quickly and safely:

·         All parents/guardians are directed to come and pick up their children at school as soon as it is safe to do so.  Please report to the office unless alerted otherwise.

·         The staff will take care of your child until you or your designee are able to pick him/her up. We can only release children to parents/guardians or individuals listed on the emergency card.

·         If the disaster occurs during school hours, we urge you to walk to school if you live within a reasonable distance.

·         Staff will keep a record of the name and address of the person to whom your child is released so that you can be properly directed to your child's whereabouts.

·         Please do not call the school - we must have the lines open for emergency calls.

We are prepared to care for your children if you are not able to reach the school and we cannot contact anyone on your child's emergency card. We have a number of people with first aid certificates and we will be in communication with various local emergency services. Emergency drills are held once a month to ensure preparedness for fires, earthquakes and hostile intruders.

If there is a road closure, we want to assure you that your child will be supervised and safe.  Here's the most likely scenario that will happen if there is a road closure that prevents families or buses from getting to BCE:

An "all-call" through our School Messenger automated system will apprise families of the situation on the number that you have listed as your home phone number only.

·      All students who are bus riders will remain in their classroom with their teachers.

·      All students who are to be picked up on campus will go to their usual spots under adult supervision.  We will not allow walkers off campus unless we have contacted a parent by phone to make sure they are home.

·      After 3:15 pm, remaining students will be returned to their classrooms.  We will have a staff member stationed in the front of the school with a walkie-talkie to call students from their classrooms, or families may park their cars and walk to their child's class.  Teachers will call the parents of remaining students to find out if rides have been arranged.

·      When the number of students remaining is down to 30, students will be moved to the MP room.  Staff will stay with students until everyone is picked up.

Here's what we need from you…

·      Please make sure that your emergency contact information is up to date.  We will not release students to anyone who is not listed as an emergency contact.  You can call the office or email our Registrar, Heather Chinello, at hchinello@slvusd.org with updated information.

·      If you need someone not listed as a contact to pick up your child, you must notify the office.

·      Please do not call the office for general information about road closures.  Our office staff will be extremely busy coordinating rides for 500+ students. Road closure information is available on the CHP website, http://cad.chp.ca.gov.  It's the website we use to get our information.

I have attached a summary of all this information so that you may print it and refer to it in an emergency.
