BCE Bearmail 9/29/17

September 29, 2017

Dear BCE Families,

Recognition Assembly ~ We had our first recognition assembly of the year on Wednesday. Thank you to our Parent Club for purchasing the "I Demonstrated Empathy" pencil pack that each student will get this year when they are recognized for demonstrating empathy.  Congratulations to all our students who were recognized this week.  We have amazing students here at BCE and I know the teachers struggled at being able to honor only a handful at this assembly.  Luckily, we have five more assemblies to get them all up on stage!

New Empathy Book ~ All classes have received their new Empathy book!  This month's selection is Last Stop on Market Street, written by Matt de la Peña and illustrated by Christian Robinson.  It is the lovely story of a boy and his grandmother who take a bus ride together and discover the beauty and wonder in their own neighborhood.

4th Grade Families ~ If you have a 4th grader, you and your family can now get in to our National Parks for free. The initiative is called Every Kid in a Park. The goal is to get 4th grade students and their families to explore nature and discover the living history here at home and all across the nation. Every single 4th grader in the United States can receive a free family pass to the national parks.  Please click on the link below to find out how to access your free park pass.

 https://everykidinapark.gov

Drive for Schools ~ Would you like to win a car or $25,000 and support BCE?  Raffle tickets are $5.00 each or a book of 6 for $25.00.  Tickets will be available in the BCE office from September 14 through October 18. 100% of the proceeds from the raffle tickets support BCE!  Thank you for supporting our students!

Halloween Costumes ~ Sunday will be October and I know many students are already planning their Halloween costumes. There are a few guidelines regarding costumes.  Costumes should be in good taste and safely constructed so that they do not interfere with regular class activities.  Gruesome costumes and bloody, fake wounds are not appropriate for an elementary school.  Weapons (including fakes), skateboards and roller blades are not allowed as part of costumes.   If you are unsure, please contact your child's teacher or the office before purchasing the costume

Triple P ~ I am excited to let you know that BCE will be hosting three parenting seminars this fall.  Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) is a program of First 5.  All seminars are free of charge and childcare is provided.  BCE has hosted Triple P seminars and groups in the past and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.  Please click here to view the flyer that contains all the details on these wonderful upcoming seminars.

Did you know???

Building a habit of good attendance in elementary school will help your student do well in high school, college and any career that they choose to pursue.  It is much easier to establish the expectation of regular school attendance in elementary school than it is when your student gets to middle or high school.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

College & Career Readiness ~ As I mentioned at Back to School Night, one of the goals we have as a School District is to make sure all our students are college and career ready.  At BCE we want to support our students to be ready for any future they can dream of!  They don't need to decide in 2nd grade what college they want to go to or what career path they want to follow, but when the time comes we want them to be prepared academically and socially to pursue their goals.

BCE Bearmail 9/15/17

September 15, 2017

Dear BCE Families,

Thank You! ~ What a wonderful Back to School Night!  Thank you for coming out and supporting your students.  The connection and communication that happens between home and school is so important to your student's success.  The teachers spent many hours putting together their presentations and materials for you and I know they appreciated seeing you here on Tuesday.  We are looking forward to continuing our important work together and as a school community supporting the great students of BCE.  THANK YOU!

Please read the following letter from Cathy Frost, the Manager of our Student Nutrition Services Department ~

On Monday, September 11, 2017, we experienced a problem with our computer and the Nutrikids software.  Most students were given incorrect information on how much money was on their account.    We have identified the software problem and it has been fixed.  We are working on fixing all our student accounting errors.  If you have any questions or concerns, please give us a call at 831-335-5384.

Our policy when our computers are down is to feed all students regardless of their account balances.    We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused.

Friendship Bench ~ Many of you may have noticed the lovely music bench on the upper playground, next to the play structure.  The bench was donated to BCE by Barb Cowie upon her retirement last year.  Ms. Cowie was a friend to all and dedicated her career to our BCE students.  As a tribute to Ms. Cowie, the new bench will be a "Friendship Bench." New friends and old friends will be able to find each other there and go off to enjoy their recess.  I have a book on order, to be read to each class, that explains how the "Friendship Bench" works and how it builds a stronger more empathetic community.

Up Coming Dates to Remember

  • 10/9 – 10/13 = Fire Safety Week
  • Friday 10/13 = BCE Ice Cream Social
  • Thursday 10/12 = Parent Club Meeting
  • Tuesday 10/24 = School Picture Make-up Day

Empathy Quote of the Week :

"Humans aren't as good as we should be in our capacity to empathize with feelings and thoughts of others, be they humans or other animals on Earth.  So, maybe part of our formal education should be training in empathy.  Imagine how different the world would be if, in fact, that we were 'reading, writing, arithmetic, empathy."

                                                            ~Neil deGrasse Tyson

Did you know???

Thank you so much for getting your students to school, and on time, every day!  There is a high correlation between student achievement and attendance.  In prior years almost 20% of our students were absent for ten or more days and approximately 35% of our students were tardy ten or more days. Additionally, we have many students who lose important instructional time when they leave school early.   As you can see that adds up to a lot of missed instructional time.  Good attendance is important for your student's success, thank you for supporting them!

Thank you for supporting your students by getting them to school and being on time every day.

Have a wonderful weekend!

BCE Bearmail 9/8/17

September 8, 2017

Dear BCE Families,

Back to School Night ~ Please join us on Thursday evening for our annual Back to School Night.  Remember this is an adult only evening.

            6:00 – 6:30 = Grades TK, K, 1 & 2

            6:40  - 6:55 = Welcome Families (Multi Purpose Room)

            7:00 – 7:30 = Grades 3, 4, 5 & SDC

Your students' amazing teachers are working hard to create an informative presentation for you.  I hope to see you all there!

School Pictures ~ All students will have their picture taken on Tuesday, September 12, both individually and with their class.  There is no obligation to purchase photographs, but if you would like to, you can send in payment with your student or pre-order online at mylifetouch.com and use the ID:  BY417062Q0.

Registration Letter ~ Please check your student's backpack this weekend.  If you have not updated your PowerSchool registration in your Parent Portal for the 2017-18 school year, your student received a letter today asking you to complete this important task. Directions to help guide you through the process are included in the letter.

Hurricane Harvey ~ Our 5th grade classes are organizing a fundraising drive for the victims of Hurricane Harvey.  Our compassionate students wanted to find a way to support the people along the Gulf Coast whose lives have been impacted by this disaster.  Our 5th graders will be raising money by doing chores for their families and friends and then donating their earnings to the relief fund.  The compassionate 5th graders realized that BCE could help even more if they asked all the other grades to join them in fundraising!  There will be a red box in the office where donations can be left.  Thank you for supporting and encouraging your student's work on behalf of others.

Label Items ~ Please take a moment this weekend to label your student's new Back to School lunch boxes, backpacks, jackets, etc.  I walked by one 5th grade class this week and there were three of the exact same backpack lined up all in a row!

Interested in Being a BCE Volunteer? ~ If you are new to SLVUSD or did not register to be a BCE volunteer last year, September is the month to complete the process.  Please read the 3 attachments to this newsletter and download and complete the Volunteer Agreement form.  Volunteer Sign-Up days will occur in the two hours prior to the start of each school's Back to School night.

Free and Reduced Lunch ~ Many families at BCE qualify for free and reduced price lunches, but may be unaware of it.  A family of four earning $45,510 or less qualifies.  If you have any questions or would like to complete a confidential application please come by the BCE office or visit www.slvusdcafe.org

Safety ~ We have a large number of students arriving before 8 am.  There is no on-campus supervision until 8:10 am.  For their safety, please do not drop children off before 8:10 am.

Empathy Quote of the Week :

"Empathy is about standing in someone else's shoes, feeling with his or her heart, seeing with his or her eyes.  Not only is empathy hard to outsource and automate, but it makes the world a better place."

Thank you so much for getting your students to school, and on time, every day!  There is a high correlation between student achievement and attendance.  Last year almost 20% of our students were absent for ten or more days and approximately 35% of our students were tardy ten or more days. Additionally, we have many students who lose important instructional time when they leave school early.   As you can see that adds up to a lot of missed instructional time.  Good attendance is important for your student's success.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school and being on time every day!

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

BCE PARENT CLUB EVENT & MEETING REMINDERS:

Thanks to those of you who attended the first Parent Club of the meeting of the year. If you were unable to make it (I know it was the same night as the middle school back to school night) then mark your calendars for the next meeting on October 12th, 6:30-8:30 pm. There are still lots of events to sign-up for!

Drive For Schools: This is one of our biggest fundraisers for the school with 100% profits to BCE!  Tickets for Drive For Schools go on sale September 15!  You can reserve your tickets now.  Purchase books with 6 tickets each for $25. Tickets available until October 18.  Drawing for grand prize of $25,000 or brand new car held at the Boardwalk on October 29.

Back to School Night: This is a child free event. There are places in the community that are available for childcare. The Rec Center is open 5:45-7:45 for $10 per child, $15 for siblings, you provide a brown bag dinner, Current Rec center enrolled students will be free.

The Lone Wolf Kenpo Academy will be open from 5:30-8:00 for $15 a person, dinner provided. Ages 4 and up only. $5 more for a sibling to attend. Please reserve your spot by September 13 at 5 pm.

The YMCA on the BCE campus has space available as well.

Please arrange your child care options so you can attend this important and informative event!

There will also be additional parking available at St. Michael's church.

Amazon Smiles: if you haven't signed up already just go to www.smile.amazon.com  You do not have to have a student enrolled at BCE to sign-up so be sure to tell family and friends to sign-up too!

Box tops: You can help the school by collecting box tops!  There are drop boxes in every classroom as well as one in the office. They are collected monthly.  Proceeds go for P.E. equipment.  In the past we have made over $1,000 so start collecting because it really does add up.  Ask your friends and family to help as well!

Facebook: If you are on Facebook and haven't joined our Facebook group then sign-up by sending an e-mail to bcepc.execs@gmail.com  This is a private group so members must be invited and have a student enrolled at BCE. It is a great forum to ask questions, receive announcements and keep involved.

Find us and like us on Facebook. Search for Boulder Creek Elementary Parent Club.

Help!: We are looking for a person to help with maintaining our school website. Please contact us at bcepc.execs@gmail.com if you, or someone you know, is interested in the volunteer opportunity.

The Flyer Process for San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District is posted on the "home" page of the District website at www.slvusd.org.   The flyers and/or blurbs are no longer inserted into the school newsletters or distributed to the children.  The District is making an effort to reduce the amount of paper that is sent home with your child(ren) and is working together to streamline the newsletter so that you read about the most important information regarding your child's school.  The District has created a website where all of the approved flyers will be posted (Community Opportunity).
