Fwd: BCE Bearmail 9/1/17

September 1, 2017

Dear BCE Families,

Welcome Back! ~ We're off to a great start and 2017-2018 promises to be another outstanding school year here at BCE.  It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Principal's Coffee on Monday.  We have such a great community to support our students here at Boulder Creek Elementary and I'm looking forward to working together this year as we support our amazing BCE Bears!

Reminder ~ There is no school on Monday, September 4th in recognition of Labor Day.  Enjoy your 3-day weekend.

Empathy ~ At BCE our overarching theme this year is empathy.  As a school community we will be learning about empathy and recognizing acts that demonstrate empathy.  Every month each class will receive a new picture book that can be used to discuss empathy.  Classes received their first book at an assembly on Wednesday.  I had the opportunity to read Kathryn Otoshi's book One to all of our classes.  I'm sure One is available at the library in town if you'd like to check it out and share the experience with your student.

Hurricane Harvey ~ Our 5th grade classes are organizing a fundraising drive for the victims of Hurricane Harvey.  Our compassionate students wanted to find a way to support the people along the Gulf Coast whose lives have been impacted by this disaster.  Our 5th graders will be raising money by doing chores for their families and friends and then donating their earnings to the relief fund.  The compassionate 5th graders realized that BCE could help even more if they asked all the other grades to join them in fundraising!  There will be a red box in the office where donations can be left.  Thank you for supporting and encouraging your students' work on behalf of others.

New Feature ~ A new school year brings a new feature the Bear Mail!  This year our wonderful Mental Health Counselor, Jen Sims, will write monthly articles on subjects that will support the growth and well-being of our students and all of us that support our BCE Bears.  Please click here to read Jen's article on empathy.

Current Student Information ~ It's been a great first week of school.  Thank you for updating your student's information in PowerSchool.  It's important that we have up to date contact and medical information for each student.  If you have not updated your student's registration information for the 2017-18 school year, please go to our District website (slvusd.org) and follow the links for student registration. Having current, up to date information is essential for us to be able to contact you to support your student or reach you in case of an emergency.

Label Items ~ Please take a moment this weekend to label your student's new back to school lunch boxes, backpacks, jackets, etc. I walked by one 5th grade class this week and there were three of the exact same backpack lined up all in a row!

Interested in Being a BCE Volunteer? ~ If you are new to SLVUSD or did not register to be a BCE volunteer last year, September is the month to complete the process.  Please read the 3 attachments to this newsletter and download and complete the Volunteer Agreement form.  Volunteer Sign-Ups will occur in the two hours prior to the start of each school's Back to School night.

Free and Reduced Lunch ~ Many families at BCE qualify for free and reduced price lunches, but may be unaware of it.  A family of four earning $45,510 or less qualifies.  If you have any questions or would like to complete a confidential application please come by the BCE office or visit www.slvusdcafe.org

Family Dinner Night ~ Next Wednesday, September 6, there will be a very special Family Dinner Night at Chili's located in the Capitola Mall.  Click here and present this flyer when you order your food and Chili's will donate 15% of your check back to BCE!   This fundraiser lasts ALL day so go ahead and meet your friend for lunch and take the family back for dinner.  Thank you for supporting BCE!

Parent Club ~ Our September Parent Club Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 7 in the MP room at 6:30 pm.  All BCE parents and guardians are automatic members.  Free babysitting will be provided.  Our BCE Parent Club is an essential element in the success of BCE.  Without our wonderful Parent Club many of our extra programs including Art Masterpiece, Spectra, and the Learning Garden would not be possible.  I hope to see you at our next meeting!

Safety ~ We have a large number of students arriving before 8 am.  There is no on-campus supervision until 8:10 am.  For their safety, please do not drop children off before 8:10 am.

Empathy Quote of the Week :

"When you show deep empathy toward others, their defensive energy goes down, and positive energy replaces it. That's when you can get more creative in solving problems."

                                                            ~Stephen Covey

Did you know???

Your children can suffer academically if they miss 10% of school days or about 18 days.  That can be just one day every two weeks, and that can happen before you know it.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school and being on time every day!
