BCE Bearmail 4/27/18

April 27, 2018

Dear BCE Families,

Family Art Night ~ I hope many of you will be able to join us TONIGHT for Family Art Night at BCE.  The fun will start at 5:15 pm with pizza and the art rotations (drumming, dance and visual arts) will begin at approximately 5:45 pm.

General Lock-Down Drill ~ Today we practiced a school-wide general lock-down.  A general lock-down might be called if there were a situation at or near school that could potentially turn into an unsafe situation for our students (wild animal sighting near campus, haz-mat situation, a call from the local sheriff making us aware of a person in town who has escaped custody, etc.)   In a general lock-down we close and lock the doors, close the window blinds, and then go on with business as usual.  Students who are out at PE would be directed to the MP where they would continue their class.  Details may vary due to the nature of the general lock-down, but generally, students will remain in their classroom with their teacher until the lock-down is cancelled.  While we hope we never have an emergency situation arise, our fire, earthquake and lock-down drills help us all be ready for any possible situation.

Student Author Fair ~ I hope you can make plans to attend the Student Author Fair at Capitola Mall next Saturday, May 5th from 10 am-3 pm.  Many of our BCE classes will be represented at this fun event and students will have the opportunity to read their original work aloud to an audience.

Going, Going, Gone ~ Our lost and found is over flowing again!  Please stop by and pick up any of your missing items.  All items still remaining in our lost and found by the end of the school day next Friday, May 4, will be donated to a local non profit.

Breakfast Club ~ Student Nutrition Services (SNS) want me to let you know that next year our Breakfast Club will be changing.  Unfortunately, it will be necessary for SNS to begin charging for breakfast just as they do for lunch.  Families that are part of our free and reduced price lunch program will continue to receive both breakfast and lunch at no cost or the reduced cost (30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch).  Our BCE Breakfast Club will continue being available, at no cost, for all students for the rest of this school year.

Please help ~ Please return the yellow form you received asking if your student will be returning to BCE next year.  That information is critical to our staffing plan.  Thank you for your help.

3rd, 4th & 5th Grade Families ~ Practice and Training Tests for 2017–18 Are Here!  Exciting news for classroom teachers, parents, and students: Smarter Balanced has updated its online Practice Tests and Training Tests, adding new items and passages.  This website is an easy and low stress way to explore the upcoming state test with your student.

Need Kindergarten? ~ Kindergarten registration for Fall 2018 is open.  Visit the BCE office to pick up a registration packet and sign up for a spot to attend our final Kindergarten orientation and tour.  The final tour will take place at 9 am on May 18.  To begin the registration process, please plan on bringing your child's Birth Certificate, Immunization Record and Proof of Residency with you.

Children must be five years old by September 1 in order to enroll in Kindergarten.  If your student has a September, October or November birthday you might be interested in our Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program.  For more information, please call the Alma in the BCE office at 831-338-6413.

We're looking forward to your student joining our BCE learning community!

Absences ~ If your student will be absent from school due to illness, or for any other reason, please call the BCE Attendance Line at 831-338-2887.  Please call every day until your student returns and let us know how their recovery is going.

Santa Cruz Mini Maker Faire ~ The Third Annual Santa Cruz Mini Maker Faire is a family-friendly event that celebrates the inventiveness here in the Santa Cruz community. The Mini Maker Faire allows creators and tinkerers to showcase their work to the community, while the public comes to enjoy hands-on, interactive experiences and connect with like-minded people. Attend and you'll be inspired and educated by the amazing and creative makers who live and work in our community.

Empathy Quote of the Week :

"My husband and I grew up with parents who supported our passion, and we're grateful to them for that.  It really helps you to find your identity when you're younger.  It helps you become a really well-rounded person, the more you can show from different perspectives.  The arts show us empathy, which is so important."

~ Idina Menzel

Did you know???

One of the best ways to help BCE keep your student safe is by providing us with current contact numbers, emergency pick-up list, and health updates as necessary.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we continue to have assemblies and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. BCE has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

BCE PARENT CLUB EVENT & MEETING REMINDERS:

Walk/Jog- A- Thon: Please continue to turn in the pledge money and return its directly to the office. If you need another envelope or pledge form you can pick one up in the front office.

Art night is TONIGHT, 5:30-8 PM on April 27, 2018. This event starts with a pizza dinner 5:30-6 PM. We still need volunteers for set-up/serving (5:25-5:55 pm) and clean-up (5:50-6:00 pm). The evening includes drumming, dancing and visual art lessons to participate in. Don't miss it!

Yearbook order forms have gone out! Orders are due April 30th - no exceptions. Yearbooks are $20. Checks can be made out to BCE Parents Club. There is still time to submit pictures. Simply download the Entourage Link app on your phone or go to the website https://link.entourageyearbooks.com/view_account.asp?l=2147BE03-9E90- 45CC-9A94- 101711C34723

Keep collecting those box tops! The next collection date will be Monday, April 30. Remember, the class who collects the most wins a prize.

Countdown until Carnival - 2 weeks!! This is our biggest fundraiser and we hope to make it our best Carnival yet. Plan to attend, help with a game or selling concessions and help to make this a memorable day for everyone. There are sign ups posted outside each of the classrooms for volunteers to help with the Big Event.  If every parent volunteers for 1-2 hours we can give the kids a super fun Carnival. If you aren't able to sign up because you aren't on campus, send us an email at bcpcexecs@gmail.com and we will sign up for you. Tell your friends and family- the more the merrier!

Silent Auction: Requests for Silent Auction Class Gift Baskets were sent home after spring break. We are asking each student to donate an item for a collective themed gift basket (collected in the classroom) to be auctioned at the Silent Auction at Carnival. We are still accepting Silent Auction donations, please turn them into the office. If you feel like making your own basket, we will gladly accept it! Thank you for participating in this important fundraiser.

We will be voting our Board Members for the 2018-2019 school year at our next meeting, May 10, 2018. We need volunteers from this year's Kinder, 1st and 3rd grades; this is your school and your children's experience. Please consider joining us at the Parent Club meetings, or chairing some events/committees. We currently need a Treasurer, Secretary and Vice President. Time commitment varies but minimally consists of the monthly meeting and additional duties depending on the position. Please ask questions/contact us if you are interested, bcepc.execs@gmail.com.

If you haven't joined our Facebook Group, and would like to, you can sign-up by sending an email to bcepc.execs@gmail.com  This is a private group so members must be invited and have a student enrolled at BCE.  It is a great forum to ask questions, receive announcements and stay involved.

Find us and like us on Facebook. Search for Boulder Creek Elementary Parent Club.

Did you know???

In addition to academic skills your students are learning other skills each day they come to school.  They are learning social skills at recess and in collaborative work in the classroom.  They are learning perseverance and resiliency as they work through academic and social struggles and they are learning that school is important.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.
