BCE Bearmail 12/20/13

December 20, 2013
Dear BCE Families,

THANK YOU Alissa Nolan and crew for another successful Gift Shift.  What a wonderful and important annual event!

THANK YOU to all for donating your time and resources for the Gift Shift, Canned Food Drive, classroom activities, Breakfast Club, and all the other exciting and amazing activities that make BCE the BEST PLACE TO BE!

THANK YOU for all your support during my first four months as principal.  It's a privilege to work with our school community in this new capacity.  I can't imagine there's a luckier principal anywhere!

As we say good-bye to 2013 I want to wish all our BCE families and friends a wonderful Winter Break.  I hope you are able to spend some extra quality time with your extra special students!  I'm looking forward to seeing you all back in 2014 and continuing our work together.

Take care, and remember school is closed now until we return on Monday, January 6, 2014.

BCE PARENT CLUB MESSAGE & EVENTS REMINDER:

We would like to take a moment to thank all of the families and local businesses who have supported our school in 2013.  Our two fall fundraisers, Drive for Schools and the Walk/Jog-a-Thon, along with our Family Dinner Night series and ongoing Escrip and Box Tops programs have raised $20,000 since the start of school.  We truly appreciate our community for working together to keep BCE strong.  Thanks to your generosity, we were able to continue to sponsor great events and provide financial support to the school.

BCE Bearmail 12/13/13

   December 13, 2013
Dear BCE Families,

THANK YOU ~ Thank you all for your generous donations to the Gift Shift, the Canned Food Drive and Breakfast Club!  What a great example of kindness and compassion you are for our students.

Family ~ One of the many advantages of being in a small community is being part of a large family.  We're there to celebrate each other success and available when someone needs our support.  As you may have heard, one of our kindergartners has been diagnosed with leukemia (ALL).  Many people have asked if there is some way they can help so I wanted to forward you this information.

One of our parents has established a donation account for the student's family with an organization called GiveForward, which gathers funds for distribution to the family.  If you would like to make a monetary donation, which the family will use for necessary expenses like gas for hospital trips, meals, and learning tools for Oliver, visit the site below.

Here's the link

At Home Keyboarding ~ Student accounts, 2nd through 5th grades, have been set up at www.typingweb.com.  Parents can contact their child's teacher for logon information.

December 6, 2013
Dear BCE Families,

I hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving break.  I can't believe it's just two more weeks until Winter Break is here!

Breakfast Club ~ The BCE Breakfast Club is in need of donations!  Our parent run Breakfast Club runs entirely on donations and serves over 80 students a day!  The Breakfast Club is open to all of our students and provides a much needed service for students who arrive at school and haven't had breakfast.   It's hard to do your best work if your tummy is empty!  During this giving time of the year you might consider supporting the BCE Breakfast Club.  THANK YOU!  Cash or checks (made out to BCE Parent Club, "Breakfast Club" in the memo) can be dropped off at the Breakfast Club or in the office.

Canned Food Drive ~ The Valley Christmas Project Canned Food Drive continues.  Please send in your non-perishable donations to help support families in our community.  This is a great opportunity for our children to discover the good feeling we receive when we do good things for others.

Dear BCE Families,

RECOMMENDATIONS

Ø  Observe your child for signs and symptoms of mumps, described below.

Ø  If your child develops symptoms of mumps, keep him/her home.  Notify your doctor and describe what's going on.  Don't take your child to the office without informing them of possible mumps exposure.

Ø  If your child is not fully immunized with 2 doses of MMR:

o    and has received one (1) dose of MMR, a second dose should be administered as soon as possible
o    and has not received any doses of MMR, they should receive the first dose as soon as possible

INFORMATION

Ø  Mumps is a contagious viral illness spread by respiratory droplets, i.e. coughing, sneezing, nasal secretions, saliva. If exposed to mumps, you may become ill 12-25 days later.  If you become ill, you may spread the disease two days before developing symptoms and up to five days after.

Ø  Mumps is usually a mild disease. Symptoms may begin with a low-grade fever, mild runny nose, cough and body aches. These symptoms may be followed by swollen neck glands, or parotitis.  Occasionally mumps may cause serious complications. The most common complication is inflammation of the testicles in males who have reached puberty; rarely does this cause infertility.  Rarely may it cause encephalitis / meningitis.

Ø  If an outbreak of mumps occurs in a school setting, a student who is not fully immunized may be excluded from attending.

BCE Bearmail 10/31/13

October 31, 2013

Dear BCE Families,

Happy Halloween! ~ I hope you had a chance to make it to our Halloween parade.  The costumes were amazing, the kids were excited, and the sun was shining! It made for quite a wonderful morning.

No School ~ Just a reminder that there is no school tomorrow, Friday November 1, for our students. It is a teacher workday and our staff will be down in Felton being trained in new and exciting technology and software.

New Check-in/Check-out System ~ Starting Monday we will be implementing a new computer based check-in/check-out system for students and adults.  When students are tardy to school, or are being checked out early, parents are now able to use our new computer station to input in their information and print out a tardy or early out slip.  Adults on campus will come into the office, log in on the computer and print out a bright yellow badge that will serve as identification.  The new system is easy to use and Heather, Margaret or I will be happy to help everyone feel comfortable with this new procedure.  We're looking forward to the increased accuracy and safety that this system will allow.

Family Conferences ~ Conferences will be held towards the end of November.  If you have not yet received sign-up information from your student's teacher, you should be receiving it soon.  Wednesday, November 20 is the first day of our five days of Family Conferences.

Dismissal Times: (Note that these are not EARLY OUT times.  Grades 1-5 are dismissed an hour earlier).

      • Kindergarten:  11:50 am  (There will be no Kindergarten bus – the regular bus will leave at 12:20 pm)
      • Grades 1-3:  12:10 pm
      • Grades 4,5:  12:15 pm

Need ~ The office is in need of pants and sweatpants that would fit students in grades K-3 and boys underpants that would fit 5 – 8 year old boys.

Donation ~ Lost and found clothing will be donated to charity on Tuesday, November 25.  If you are missing jackets, etc. please check the Lost and Found ASAP.  Please mark your child's last name or room number on their jackets and sweaters.

Up Coming Dates to Remember:

  • Friday 11/1 = No School (Teacher Work Day)
  • Thursday 11/7 = Family Science Night
  • Monday 11/11 = No School (Veteran's Day)
  • Thursday 11/14 = Parents Club Meeting
  • 11/18 – 11/22 = BCE Book Fair in our library
  • 11/20 – 11/26 = Family Conferences (see above)
  • 11/27 – 11/29 = Thanksgiving Break

Attendance Facts = Our attendance rate last month was 96.02%.  Unfortunately, this is the lowest percentage of all the schools in our district and a bit shy of our goal of 97%.  Let's work together to meet our goal next month and giving our students all the advantages they deserve!

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Safety Tip of the Week: The 2013 Physical Fitness results show that the percentage of our students scoring in the "body composition- needs improvement - health risk" continues to be a concern.  The state reports that the students of SLVUSD are reporting 18% in this unhealthy range.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!
