BCE Bearmail 9/25/15

September 25, 2015

Dear BCE Families,

Hope to See You! ~ I hope to see many of you at the Ice Cream Social next Friday, October 2 (5-7pm).  This is always a fun event and a good way to touch base with friends and our BCE community.  Remember the first scoop is free for BCE students!

Drive for Schools ~ Would you like to win a car or $25,000 and support BCE?  This is the only fundraiser we have this fall and all proceeds from the sales of Drive for Schools Raffle tickets come back to BCE! Raffle tickets are $5.00 each or a book of 6 for $25.00.  Tickets can be purchased from the order forms that went home with each student.  Additionally, tickets will be available at the Ice Cream Social next week and are also available in our office. Thank you for supporting our students!

College & Career Readiness ~ As I mentioned at Back to School Night, one of the goals we have as a School District is to make sure all our students are college and career ready. At BCE we want to support our students to be ready for any future they can dream of!  They don't need to decide in 2nd grade what college they want to go to or what career path they want to follow, but when the time comes we want them to be prepared academically and socially to pursue their goals.

Helping Children ~ Please click on the "Links" tab at the top of the BCE website and click on the "Helping Children Newsletter". This informative newsletter is sponsored by our Parent Club and each moth provides new and interesting articles as well as advice to families with young children.

BCE PARENT CLUB EVENT & MEETING REMINDERS:

Drive For Schools – Head on over to the Harvest Festival in downtown BC this Saturday and check out our BCE booth to get your winning ticket.  Fill out the ticket stubs, return it to our ticket box, and then sit back and plan how you will spend your $25,000.  Someone from this area is going to win the big prize and it might as well be YOU!!  The Drive for Schools program is one of the best ways to support BCE. 100% of the sale of tickets goes straight to the programs and supplies we desperately need at BCE.  Purchasing a ticket or a booklet of tickets is like giving money directly to the school except you also get a chance to win a car or $25,000 cash!  You can also get your tickets from the pink order form that went home with your child this week, at the BC Pharmacy, the Ice Cream Social, catch us in front of Johnnie's on designated days, or just stop into the school office.  If you would like to opt out of this fall fundraiser, look towards the bottom of your flier in order to check that option.

BCE FAMILY NOODLE NIGHT - Wednesday, October 7, 5:00-10:00 PM

The Boulder Creek Golf Course and Country Club will be hosting a spaghetti and lasagna feed for their 1st BCE Family Dinner Night.  Salad bar and bread will be included with each meal. A percentage of the night's proceeds will benefit the 4th Grade.  More details will be shared in next week's Bear Mail.

Ice Cream Social – You know you don't want to miss the social event of the season!  So make your plans now to be at the Ice Cream Social on Friday, October 2nd from 5pm to 7pm.  Greet our fabulous Kindergarten teachers to get your tickets, head over to the fantastic fifth grade scoopers to get your favorite flavor, and then sit back and share your greatness with the other amazing members of our school community.  You know it won't be the same without you!  The first scoop is free for all current BCE students.  Additional scoops are 50¢.

BCE Bearmail 9/18/15

September 18, 2015

Dear BCE Families,

Thank You! ~ What a wonderful Back to School Night!  Thank you for coming out and supporting your students.  The connection and communication that happens between home and school is so important to your student's success.  The teachers spent many hours putting together their presentations and materials for you and I know they appreciated seeing you here on Wednesday. We are looking forward to continuing our important work together and as a school community supporting the great students of BCE.  THANK YOU!

Great Evening! ~ It was fantastic to see so many of you at the first Parent Club meeting of the year last night!  We have the most amazing Parent Club here at BCE and I love that there are such a variety of ways for parents to be involved.   Our Parent Club provides so much for our school (field trips, school supplies, assemblies, technology, umbrellas for extra shade, etc.). Thank you for all you do and for all the support you provide the students of BCE.

CAASP Test Results ~ Last Wednesday the State Superintendent of Public Instruction released results from the 2014-2015 school year California Assessment Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) test.

The public has access to the 2014-2015 CAASPP Reports on the California Department of Education CAASPP Reporting website at http://caaspp.cde.ca.gov/. The website will display the statewide, county, district and school level CAASPP reports for the spring 2015.

Individual Student Reports will be mailed to you from the San Lorenzo Valley District Office when we receive them in the next couple of weeks.

Attached, please find a letter from our Assistant Superintendent, Debbie Bodenheimer, with additional information regarding the CAASP results.

Up Coming Dates to Remember

  • Wednesday 10/7 = Family Dinner Night (Lasagna Feed at BC Country Club)
  • Thursday 10/8 = Parent Club Meeting (6:30, MP)
  • October 12-16 = Fire Safety Week
  • Thursday 10/29 = Halloween Parade @ BCE
  • Friday 10/30 = No School (Teacher Work Day)

Quote of the Week (Success):

"Failure is the condiment that gives success its flavor."

                                                Truman Capote

Did you know???

Thank you so much for getting your students to school, and on time, every day!  There is a high correlation between student achievement and attendance.  Last year almost 20% of our students were absent for ten or more days and approximately 35% of our students were tardy ten or more days. Additionally, we have many students who lose important instructional time when they leave school early.   As you can see that adds up to a lot of missed instructional time.  Good attendance is important for your student's success.  Thank you for supporting them!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

BCE PARENT CLUB EVENT & MEETING REMINDERS:

First Parents Club Meeting – We had a great first meeting last night, meeting up with some new faces as well as familiar ones.  We planned our year's events, approved the year's Parents Club calendar, talked about volunteer opportunities, and heard important school information from Mrs. Fosburgh.  Our next meeting will be on Thursday, October 8th and we will discuss our budget as well as other items.

Coming up:

Drive For Schools – The Drive For Schools fundraiser is officially here, and we couldn't be more excited! Look in next week's folders for fliers on how you can order tickets, or stop by the BC Pharmacy, visit our booth at the Harvest Festival and the Ice Cream Social, catch us in front of Johnnie's on designated days, or just stop into the school office.  If you would like to opt out of this fall fundraiser, look towards the bottom of your flier in order to check that option.

Classroom Helpers – Each teacher had a volunteer sign-up sheet during Back to School Night.  There were volunteer positions for an Art Masterpiece parent, a Learning Garden parent, a Parents Club Rep (helper for Staff Appreciation Week), and a yearbook parent.  Please consider filling any position that was left empty.  Without volunteers, our students don't get to enjoy these wonderful programs.  Thank you for your consideration.

Ice Cream Social – The much-anticipated Ice Cream Social is coming back to BCE on October 2nd from 5pm to 7pm.  You will not want to miss this social event of the season.  Our amazing 5th graders will be serving up a delicious free scoop to all current BCE students.  Additional scoops are 50¢.

Contact Information ~ Thank you as well for making sure we have current contact information (home, cell and work phone numbers, email addresses, home addresses, etc.) for not only you, but also for any additional people that may be picking up your student.

If the weather predictions are accurate, we may be in for a rough winter.  Having current numbers and access to voicemail that is not full is critical.  Thank You.

Back to School Night ~ Please join us on Wednesday evening, September 16, for our annual Back to School Night.  Remember this is an adult only evening.

            6:00 – 6:30 = Grades K, 1, 2 & 3

*From 5:30 – 6:00 in Room 26 our music teacher, Carey Liston, will be presenting information about band to our 5th grade families.  Please plan on attending if your 5th grade student is interested in our after school band program.

Your students' amazing teachers are working hard to create an informative presentation for you.  I hope to see you all there!

CAASP Test Results ~ On Wednesday the State Superintendent of Public Instruction released results from the 2014-2015 school year California Assessment Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) test.

The public has access to the 2014-2015 CAASPP Reports on the California Department of Education CAASPP Reporting website at http://caaspp.cde.ca.gov/. The website will display the statewide, county, district and school level CAASPP reports for the spring 2015.

Attached, please find a letter from our Assistant Superintendent, Debbie Bodenheimer,  with additional information regarding the CAASP results

Quote of the Week (Responsibility):

"Be the change that you want to see in others."

                                                Gandhi

Did you know???

According to Common Sense Media, studies have shown a link between heavy media use and issues such as obesity, lack of sleep, academic challenges, aggression, and other behavior difficulties. The reality is that most families will go through periods of heavy and light media use, but, so long as there's a balance, kids should be just fine.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

BCE Special Bearmail 9/9/15 - Modified Schedule Due to Extreme Heat

September 9, 2015

Dear BCE Families,

I just wanted to follow-up on information you should have received regarding our adjusted schedule for the next two days.  Due to the predicted extreme heat conditions, SLVUSD has decided to modify school schedules for the rest of the week.  Attached you'll find a letter from our Superintendent, Dr. Bruton, that will give you additional information about schedule changes for all of our District schools.

BCE will be following our Wednesday Early Out schedule for tomorrow, 9/10 and Friday 9/11.  Kindergartners will be dismissed at their regular time of 11:50 and 1st through 5th graders will be dismissed at 1:15 both days.

Additionally, our Back to School Night, which had originally been scheduled for tomorrow night, September 10, has been rescheduled for next Wednesday September 16.

I want to thank you for your understanding and flexibility.   As you know, the safety of our BCE students is our highest priority.

On a lighter note - why cook in this heat when you can head to Boulder Creek Pizza & Pub for the BCE Family Dinner Night with karaoke!  20% of the night's proceeds will go towards the 5th grade science camp.  Order dine-in, carry-out or delivery between 5 pm and 9:30 pm tonight!
