BCE Bearmail 2/23/18

February 23, 2018

Dear BCE Families,

Our BCE Way Day! ~ Today your student participated in one of our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) activities.  Classes started in the MP Room where we reviewed the BCE Way and presented each class with a copy of the book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud.  This book encourages positive behavior by showing the reader how kindness, appreciation and love fill all our buckets.  The next step involved going with their class to 5 different stations around school, where they were met by various staff members, and reviewed what the BCE Way looks like in each of those areas (walkways, lunch line, recess, etc.)  Our goal was to remind us all that by living the BCE Way (being Respectful, Responsible and Safe) we can fill each other's buckets as well as our own.

Empathy Quote of the Week :

"When you sing with a group of people, you learn how to subsume yourself into a group consciousness because a cappella singing is all about the immersion of the self into the community.  That's one of the great feelings - to stop being me for a little while and to become us.  That way lies empathy, the great social virtue."

~ Brian Eno

Did you know???

Helping your student arrive to school every day and stay for the whole school day conveys to your student that you respect their teacher, the other students, and the important work that they are doing in school every day.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we continue to have assemblies and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. BCE has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

Special BCE Bearmail 2/21/18 - Press Release

February 21, 2018

Dear BCE Families,

____________________________________________________

SAN LORENZO VALLEY

UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

Press Release

Superintendent Dr. Laurie Bruton

Contact: Dr. Laurie Bruton, lbruton@slvusd.org

February 21, 2018

The District recently learned about allegations made on social media regarding one of its bus drivers. The following is intended to address those allegations and provide information for students, parents and District faculty who have questions about the nature of the allegations.

On September 21, 2017, San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District was informed by the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department that law enforcement was investigating allegations made by a student and her mother about inappropriate touching by a SLVUSD bus driver. The District immediately placed the driver on administrative leave pending the investigation.

The District fully cooperated with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department during its investigation, which was concluded by October 6, 2017 and reportedly passed on to the District Attorney's office with a recommendation not to press charges. To date, the District Attorney's office has not pressed charges against the bus driver. When it became clear that the Sheriff's Department had completed its investigation, the District hired an outside independent investigator to conduct an internal investigation on behalf of the school district. The District's internal investigation determined that each of the allegations were not sustained.

The bus driver who was the subject of the allegations has worked for the District since January of 2017. Before he began working for the District, the driver was fingerprinted and a criminal background check was conducted by the California Department of Justice and FBI. The driver provided positive references and the District conducted a reference check. Finally, the District is not aware of any complaints having ever been made about the driver until the Sheriff's Department contacted the District on September 21, 2017.

We understand many parents have questions, so the District will be as transparent and forthcoming as possible, but please understand that the District cannot provide any information that might interfere with law enforcement activities and/or invade the bus driver's privacy rights. Parents who have additional questions can direct any inquiries to Superintendent Bruton.

The District strives to provide a positive learning environment for all students. The District, teachers, and staff understand the seriousness of these allegations, so the District will continue to assist law enforcement in the event any further investigation is deemed necessary. SLVUSD is committed to school and community safety.  Administration, teachers and staff will continue to work towards ensuring that every one of our students feels safe at school.

BCE Bearmail 2/16/18

February 16, 2018

Dear BCE Families,

No School ~ Just a reminder that there will be no school on Monday as we celebrate Presidents' Day.

Family Dance ~ I hope you are able to join us tonight for our first BCE Family Dance!  The Dance will be held in the MP room at BCE and will run from 6 pm-8 pm.  Please remember that this is a family dance and students need to be accompanied by adults.  This is not an event where students can be dropped off and picked up later.  Additionally, while attending this fun event, please be sure your student is always within your sight.  Our campus is dark in the evening and we do not want unaccompanied students outside.

Many thanks to our BCE Parent Club for organizing this fun event.  I'm sure a fun time will be had by all!

School Safety Plan ~ In view of recent tragic events in Florida I wanted to assure you that BCE, and all our schools in SLVUSD, have a Safe School Plan in place.  Additionally, we regularly practice emergency drills with our students and are working with the rest of Santa Cruz County schools and law enforcement on an aligned, coordinated response in responding to threats of violence.  Keeping all of our students safe at school is our highest priority.  Please visit the SLVUSD website where you can review the Safe School Plans for all our schools.  Additional information can be found by clicking here to read an important letter from our Superintendent.

BCE PARENT CLUB EVENT & MEETING REMINDERS:

There are a lot of volunteer opportunities for our big events in the Spring including the walk-jog-a-thon, silent auction and Carnival! Carnival is not possible without a lot of helping hands. We all know "many hands make for light work." We are currently looking for a Carnival co-chairs, concession team leader, and many other important yet smaller positions. If you think you may be interested in helping to plan this event contact us right away. This is our most widely attended event and will take place Saturday, May 12, 2018, 10AM-3PM. If you are interested please e-mail us at bcepc.execs@gmail.com

The Family Valentine's Dance will be held TONIGHT, Friday, February 16 from 6-8 pm in the MP Room. Flyers will be coming home, but please note the adjusted time. This is a family dance, all children who attend BCE and their families are invited (students must be with their grown up - this is not a drop off event). There will be musical chairs, photo ops, and family-friendly fun. There will also be a food truck!

Another fun event that is included on the monthly calendar is a new fundraiser that includes a sweet treat. Cutesy Cupcake in Scotts Valley has generously offered to host a fundraiser on February 21, 2018, from 3-7PM and donate 20% of profits to our school. You must mention BCE or bring the flier in with you. The flier will come home February 20 so that you don't lose it over the long weekend.

Please note that Family Movie Night has been moved to March 9! Our master calendar had said February 9th but we had to push it back a month. We will be showing Coco! Bring a pillow and a blanket and get cozy with your friends and family! Thanks for your understanding with the schedule change.

Last but not least, Staff Appreciation Week is the last week in February. If you have a class Parents Club Representative (please figure out who yours is or email us to find out) they will be coordinating the teacher appreciation events in your classroom that week. A daily calendar of these individual tokens of appreciation will be coming home mid-month.
