BCE Bearmail 2/9/18

February 9, 2018

Dear BCE Families,

No School ~ Just a reminder that there will be no school on Monday as we celebrate President Lincoln's birthday.

Valentine's Day ~ As February rolls in we start thinking about Valentine's Day, please remember that if your student brings Valentine cards for one student in the class, they need to bring cards for all the students in their class.  Valentine's Day is not a day for hurt feelings and hearts.

Principal's Meet & Greet ~ Please join me, and representatives from our amazing BCE Parent Club, for some coffee and refreshments.  We'll enjoy some time to catch up with old friends, meet new ones and hear about upcoming events for our BCE community.  I look forward to seeing you in our MP at 8:35am Thursday morning.

Family Dance ~ I hope you are able to join us for our first BCE Family Dance next Friday.  The Dance will be held in the MP room at BCE and will run from 6pm-8pm.  Please remember that this is a family dance and students need to be accompanied by adults.  This is not an event where students can be dropped off and picked up later.  Additionally, while attending this fun event, please be sure your student is always within your sight.  Our campus is dark in the evening and we do not want unaccompanied students outside.

Many thanks to our BCE Parent Club for organizing this fun event.  I'm sure a fun time will be had by all!

Board Briefing ~ Please click here to enjoy the Board Briefing from last night's board meeting. The full agenda can be accessed on our district website, www.slvusd.org.

Digital Citizenship ~ The following is a great resource on Digital Citizenship for parents. https://www.commonsensemedia.org/parent-concerns

FashionTEENS Information ~ Click here for information about the upcoming event for students at middle and high schools.

Got Grants? ~ Parents: Do any of you have experience in grant-writing? Are you interested in investigating grants for SLVUSD and helping to write them to add to our educational programs? If so, please contact Debi Bodenheimer, Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services. dbodenheimer@slvusd.org

Pennies for Patients ~ Starting next week, BCE students will have the opportunity to participate in our annual Pennies for Patients drive which benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  The drive will run from Feb. 5 - 16.  Each student will be bringing a collection box home this week and encouraged to fund raise for cancer patients.  Thank you for your support. This fundraiser is a wonderful opportunity for students to see how small contributions joined together can make a generous donation to an organization that makes a difference in peoples lives.

Absences ~ If your student will be absent from school due to illness, or for any other reason, please call the BCE Attendance Line at 338-2887.  Please call every day until your student returns and let us know how their recovery is going.

Empathy Quote of the Week :

"Empathy and social skills are social intelligence, the interpersonal part of emotional intelligence.  That's why they look alike."

~ Daniel Goldman

Did you know???

Experts suggest that you keep your computer in a common area, not in individual bedrooms, where you can watch and monitor its use.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Wishing you all a wonderful three-day weekend!

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we continue to have assemblies and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. BCE has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

BCE PARENT CLUB EVENT & MEETING REMINDERS:

There are a lot of volunteer opportunities for our big events in the Spring including the walk-jog-a-thon, silent auction and Carnival! Carnival is not possible without a lot of helping hands. We all know "many hands make for light work." We are currently looking for a Carnival co-chairs, concession team leader, and many other important yet smaller positions. If you think you may be interested in helping to plan this event contact us right away. This is our most widely attended event and will take place Saturday, May 12, 2018, 10AM-3PM. If you are interested please e-mail us at bcepc.execs@gmail.com

The Family Valentine's Dance will be held Friday, February 16 from 6-8 pm in the MP Room. Flyers will be coming home, but please note the adjusted time. This is a family dance, all children who attend BCE and their families are invited (students must be with their grown up - this is not a drop off event). There will be musical chairs, photo ops, and family-friendly fun. There will also be a food truck!

Principal's Meet and Greet is this Thursday, February 15, 8:35-9:35 a.m. If you missed the one in the fall, are new to BCE, or just want to find out what is happening at BCE, please arrange to come to this event. It is short and right after drop off for your convenience. Refreshments and Jenna Sue's coffee cake will be served!

Another fun event that is included on the monthly calendar is a new fundraiser that includes a sweet treat. Cutesy Cupcake in Scotts Valley has generously offered to host a fundraiser on February 21, 2018, from 3-7PM and donate 20% of profits to our school. You must mention BCE or bring the flier in with you. The flier will come home February 20 so that you don't lose it over the long weekend.

Please note that Family Movie Night has been moved to March 9! Our master calendar had said February 9th but we had to push it back a month. We will be showing Coco! Bring a pillow and a blanket and get cozy with your friends and family! Thanks for your understanding with the schedule change.

Last but not least, Staff Appreciation Week is the last week in February. If you have a class Parents Club Representative (please figure out who yours is or email us to find out) they will be coordinating the teacher appreciation events in your classroom that week. A daily calendar of these individual tokens of appreciation will be coming home mid-month.

Facebook: If you are on Facebook and haven't joined our Facebook group then sign-up by sending an email to bcepc.execs@gmail.com  This is a private group so members must be invited and have a student enrolled at BCE.  It is a great forum to ask questions, receive announcements and stay involved.

The Flyer Process for San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District is posted on the "home" page of the District website at www.slvusd.org.   The flyers and/or blurbs are no longer inserted into the school newsletters or distributed to the children.  The District is making an effort to reduce the amount of paper that is sent home with your child(ren) and is working together to streamline the newsletter so that you read about the most important information regarding your child's school.  The District has created a website where all of the approved flyers will be posted (Community Opportunity).
