BCE Bearmail 10/31/13

October 31, 2013

Dear BCE Families,

Happy Halloween! ~ I hope you had a chance to make it to our Halloween parade.  The costumes were amazing, the kids were excited, and the sun was shining! It made for quite a wonderful morning.

No School ~ Just a reminder that there is no school tomorrow, Friday November 1, for our students. It is a teacher workday and our staff will be down in Felton being trained in new and exciting technology and software.

New Check-in/Check-out System ~ Starting Monday we will be implementing a new computer based check-in/check-out system for students and adults.  When students are tardy to school, or are being checked out early, parents are now able to use our new computer station to input in their information and print out a tardy or early out slip.  Adults on campus will come into the office, log in on the computer and print out a bright yellow badge that will serve as identification.  The new system is easy to use and Heather, Margaret or I will be happy to help everyone feel comfortable with this new procedure.  We're looking forward to the increased accuracy and safety that this system will allow.

Family Conferences ~ Conferences will be held towards the end of November.  If you have not yet received sign-up information from your student's teacher, you should be receiving it soon.  Wednesday, November 20 is the first day of our five days of Family Conferences.

Dismissal Times: (Note that these are not EARLY OUT times.  Grades 1-5 are dismissed an hour earlier).

      • Kindergarten:  11:50 am  (There will be no Kindergarten bus – the regular bus will leave at 12:20 pm)
      • Grades 1-3:  12:10 pm
      • Grades 4,5:  12:15 pm

Need ~ The office is in need of pants and sweatpants that would fit students in grades K-3 and boys underpants that would fit 5 – 8 year old boys.

Donation ~ Lost and found clothing will be donated to charity on Tuesday, November 25.  If you are missing jackets, etc. please check the Lost and Found ASAP.  Please mark your child's last name or room number on their jackets and sweaters.

Up Coming Dates to Remember:

  • Friday 11/1 = No School (Teacher Work Day)
  • Thursday 11/7 = Family Science Night
  • Monday 11/11 = No School (Veteran's Day)
  • Thursday 11/14 = Parents Club Meeting
  • 11/18 – 11/22 = BCE Book Fair in our library
  • 11/20 – 11/26 = Family Conferences (see above)
  • 11/27 – 11/29 = Thanksgiving Break

Attendance Facts = Our attendance rate last month was 96.02%.  Unfortunately, this is the lowest percentage of all the schools in our district and a bit shy of our goal of 97%.  Let's work together to meet our goal next month and giving our students all the advantages they deserve!

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Safety Tip of the Week: The 2013 Physical Fitness results show that the percentage of our students scoring in the "body composition- needs improvement - health risk" continues to be a concern.  The state reports that the students of SLVUSD are reporting 18% in this unhealthy range.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

BCE Bearmail 10/25/13

October 25, 2013

Dear BCE Families,

Halloween - There are a few guidelines regarding costumes.  Costumes should be in good taste and safely constructed so that they do not interfere with regular class activities.  Gruesome costumes and bloody, fake wounds are not appropriate for an elementary school.  Weapons (including fakes), skateboards and roller blades are not allowed as part of costumes.   If you are unsure, please contact your child's teacher or the office before purchasing the costume.  The Halloween Parade is slated for 9:00 am on the upper playground.

Thank You!  - Thank you for supporting BCE with your generous donations.  The Drive for Schools fundraiser is complete and I for one will be keeping my fingers crossed that one of our BCE families will be driving a new car after the raffle this Sunday!

Donations for the Walk-Jog are continuing to come in.  Please try and get those turned in by the end of next week.

The generous donations you make in terms of time and money are invaluable to us.  It's such a great feeling to be part of a community that supports our students in so many important ways.

No School – Just a reminder that there is no school for our students on Friday November 1st.  It is a teacher workday and our staff will be down in Felton being trained in new and exciting technology and software.

Attendance  Facts = Studies prove there is a high correlation between chronic elementary absenteeism and high school drop out rates.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Safety Tip of the Week: Please model the BCE Way by not taking a short cut through the parking lot.  Please walk around the perimeter on the outside of the chain boarder.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Fwd: BCE Bearmail 10/11/13

October 11, 2013

Dear BCE Families,

Another great success!  The Ice Cream Social was such a fun event.  It was a pleasure to spend the evening with the wonderful students and families of BCE.  Thank you to our Parent Club and all the volunteers for their hard work and generosity!

As the weather changes please take a moment to label your student's outerwear.  Every year we end up with hundreds of unclaimed jackets and sweatshirts that we donate to charity.  By putting their last name on the inside collar we are able to get the item back to your student.  Thank you!

Hot Lunch?  You can now prepay and check the balance of your student's lunch card online!  You can access the prepayment page on our BCE website by clicking on the Lunch Menu icon.

Attendance  Facts = According to Ed. Code section 48260 a student is considered a truant if they are absent from school without a valid excuse more than three days, or tardy in excess of 30 minutes on each of more than three school days in one school year.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Safety Tip of the Week: Please follow the directions of our staff members while they are on crosswalk duty.  They are there to protect our students and to direct traffic in a way that is efficient, but more importantly safe.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Fwd: BCE Bearmail Correction 10/7/13

October 7, 2013

Dear BCE Families,

We inadvertently gave you the wrong attendance information on Friday.  The sentence should have read "Last month 39% of our students missed at least one day of school."  This represents 203 students who missed one or more days in September.

BCE Bearmail 10/4/13

October 4, 2013

Dear BCE Families,

One of the three components of the BCE Way is safety and that has been a high priority for us here at BCE.  Last week all the students participated in bus safety training and this week was all about fire safety!  We want to thank our bus drivers and Valley fire departments for their time and support in help keep all our students safe.

The YMCA is partnering with us to offer a Mileage Club for our students.  Starting today students in grades 1-3 will have the opportunity to participate during their lunch recess on Mondays and Fridays.  Students will be able to walk or run as much or little as they like and can earn "toe tokens" for every 5 miles they complete.

Hot Lunch?  You can now prepay and check the balance of your student's lunch card online!  You can access the prepayment page on our BCE website by clicking on the Lunch Menu icon.

Attendance = As you may know we are committed to increasing our attendance this year.  Last month 39 of our students missed at least one day of school.  That is a lot of important missed instructional time for our students.  The Santa Cruz Sentinel published an interesting article on the subject.

http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/education/ci_24210219/empty-desks-new-report-shows-santa-cruz-county?IADID=Search-www.santacruzsentinel.com-www.santacruzsentinel.com

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Safety Tip of the Week: Please do not park in the yellow drop-off zone on Harmon Street.  It creates an unsafe situation for our students by forcing them to walk in front of cars.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and I hope to see many of you at the Ice Cream Social tonight!
