BCE Bearmail 9/23/16

September 23, 2016

Dear BCE Families,

College & Career Readiness ~ As I mentioned at Back to School Night, one of the goals we have as a School District is to make sure all our students are college and career ready. At BCE we want to support our students to be ready for any future they can dream of!  They don't need to decide in 2nd grade what college they want to go to or what career path they want to follow, but when the time comes we want them to be prepared academically and socially to pursue their goals.

Drive for Schools ~ Would you like to win a car or $25,000 and support BCE?  Raffle tickets are $5.00 each or a book of 6 for $25.00.  Tickets will be available in the BCE office from September 15 through October 12.  You will also have the opportunity to purchase tickets at tomorrow's Santa Cruz Mountain Harvest Festival. 100% of the proceeds from these raffle tickets support BCE!  Thank you for supporting our students!

PowerSchool Registration Reminder

29% of our BCE Families have not completed this important piece of your student's registration.  Please take a moment to check to see if your student's registration is complete.  THANK YOU!

Parents - If you have not submitted student online registration via PowerSchool, please take a few minutes to do so.

It is a matter of safety.

· We need to have the current and correct contact information via phone or email in order to contact you if your child becomes ill or has a medical or some other type of emergency while at school.

· We need to have the current and correct information for your emergency contacts in case you are not accessible.

This is why we ask you to complete the annual on-line registration for each of your students every year.  If you haven't checked to make sure all of your information is current and correct, please complete the PowerSchool Registration for each of your students as soon as possible.

How do you know if you've submitted your student's PowerSchool Registration?  If you log into PowerSchool and click on the link for "PowerSchool Registration" and you do not see any forms available to you, then you have done an update. If, however, there are links to your child's online form, then your registration has not been updated.

If you need assistance setting up your parent PowerSchool account, you can come into your school office and Mrs. Steinberg can assist you in creating your account. Or, you can email Gail Heagerty at gheagerty@slvusd.org for assistance.

BCE PARENT CLUB EVENT & MEETING REMINDERS:

Thank you! – We would like to extend a huge sentiment of gratitude to all of our amazing Ice Cream Social volunteers - from the kindergarten teachers, to the 5th grade students and their parents, to the Parents Club organizers!!  What a fabulous event!

Upcoming Events:

Drive For Schools Fundraiser – One of our biggest and most important fundraisers is underway, and we need you to help make it a success. Get your tickets from the office today.  They will also be available at the Harvest Festival, tomorrow, September 24, from 11 am to 6 pm.  Look for our booth near Jenna Sue's.  You can also fill out the request-for-tickets form that went home with your child, turn it in, and we'll send you the tickets.  Individual tickets are $5 and booklets of 6 tickets are only $25.  The best part is that 100% of the sales go directly to BCE.  It's like handing your teacher a $5 donation (or more), but now you get a chance to win a car, money, or 100 other prizes.  So spread the word, because Grandmas, Grandpas, aunts, uncles, neighbors all like chances to win prizes while supporting their local school!

Art Masterpiece – Congratulations!  Your beautiful child/children get the benefit of an amazing program this year – Art Masterpiece!  The program has been revamped this year to include a more diverse set of artists and media.  The orientation meeting has been set for Thursday, September 29 at 8:45 am in the office's back room. This is a great opportunity for parents to make a huge difference in their child's classroom.  You don't need to be an artist or a teacher to be an excellent volunteer. Please direct questions to MaryBeth Curley at marybethcurley@gmail.com.  If you are a parent or know of a parent in Ms. Eiriksson, Ms. Gibney, Ms. Rutter, or Ms. Wilson's class who could help out, please don't hesitate to contact MaryBeth to sign up. Thank you volunteers!

Yearbook – Being on the yearbook committee is fun, easy, and leaves a lasting memory for your child to enjoy.  We will have two orientation meetings this year to choose from.  There will be a morning meeting on Monday, October 3 at 8:30 am in the back room of the office or you can attend the evening meeting on Tuesday, October 4 at 6:30 pm in the computer lab.  Thank you for being a part of this wonderful keepsake!

Special BCE Bearmail - New Requirements for Volunteers

September 19, 2016

Dear BCE Volunteers,

We wanted to follow up from last Friday's Bearmail which included Dr Bruton's letter about new volunteer requirements.  We understand that you may have already started to volunteer in the classroom or drive on field trips.  If you plan to volunteer after November 1, 2016, you must have completed the new paperwork and fingerprinting and/or TB testing requirements.  You can pick up paperwork in the BCE office and once completed, turn in all the documentation to the BCE office or the HR department at the SLVUSD office in Ben Lomond by October 21, 2016.  Paperwork turned in after this date will delay the start of when you may volunteer again for SLVUSD.  Please note that most fingerprints take less than a week to clear, but sometimes take over 30 days.

To see the definitions of different levels and requirements of volunteers, please click here.

To download the new Volunteer Agreement, please click here.

To download the Volunteer Handbook, please click here.

In order to make this process as easy as possible for our volunteers, a School Nurse will be available on designated Volunteer Sign-up Days (see below) in September and October to conduct free TB Risk Assessment Screenings.  Representatives from the HR department will also be available on these days to process Live Scan fingerprint forms for you to take to the County Office of Education.  Please bring your state issued photo ID to the sign-up day.

Volunteer Sign-Up Days

BCE:  Thursday, September 22 from 2 pm - 4 pm in the staff room or Thursday, October 6 from 8 am - 10 am in the staff room.

Tri-Campus: Wednesday, September 28 from 1 pm - 3:30 pm in the cafeteria or Wednesday, October 12 from 8:15 am - 9:45 am in the cafeteria.

District Office:  Tuesday, October 11 from 10 am - 12 pm in the HR office.

Thank you for supporting the education of our students!  Don't hesitate to call with questions.

BCE Bearmail 9/2/16

September 2, 2016

Dear BCE Families,

Reminder ~ There is no school on Monday, September 5th in recognition of Labor Day.  Enjoy your 3-day weekend!

Back to School Night ~ Please join us on Tuesday evening for our annual Back to School Night.  Remember this is an adult only evening.

            6:00 – 6:30 = Grades 3, 4, 5 & SDC

            6:40  - 6:55 = Welcome Families (Multi Purpose Room)

            7:00 – 7:30 = Grades TK, K, 1 & 2

Your students' amazing teachers are working hard to create an informative presentation for you.  I hope to see you all there!

Shout Outs ~ Your student may have come home with a blue "Shout Out" notice or they may have told you about them.  Shout Outs recognize students who are living the BCE Way and demonstrating kindness, compassion, empathy, etc.  A staff member or classmate completes the information on the Shout Out form and then shares these positive examples with fellow students.  Starting next Friday we'll have our first Shout Out Friday, where I announce some of the examples of excellence that have we've seen on our campus.

Transitional Kindergarten ~ As you may already know, we are fortunate to have our first Transitional Kindergarten (TK) class here at BCE.  Because TK is a relatively new opportunity we have put together an information sheet about the TK program and to provide some answers to questions you may have.  Please click here for more information.

Parent Club ~ Our September Parent Club Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 17 in the MP room at 6:30 pm.  All BCE parents and guardians are automatic members.  Free babysitting will be provided.

Site Council ~ If you are interested in serving on the Site Council for the 2016-17 school year, please complete the attached application by clicking here and return it to Margaret Zavaroni in our office no later than Friday September 23.  Our Site Council provides a very important function for our school.  The BCE Site Council is charged with helping to develop, recommend, and annually review the Single Site Plan for Student Achievement.  Additionally, the Site Council meets to provide ongoing informational and educational process directed towards parents and other interested persons about current school programs.  Thank you for your consideration on joining this special group.

Watch Phones ~ In keeping with our technology policy, students are not allowed to wear watches in class that also act as phones or communication devices.   If your student does own such a device it must remain in their backpack, in silent mode, throughout the school day.  For more information, please click here to read our Cell Phone & Electronic Devices permission slip which gives information about our policy.

Safety ~ We have a large number of students arriving before 8 am.  There is no on-campus supervision until 8:10 am.  For their safety, please do not drop children off before 8:10 am.

Up Coming Dates to Remember

  • Monday 9/5 = No School (Labor Day)
  • Tuesday 9/6 = BCE Back to School Night
  • Monday 9/12 = Family Dinner Night, 2 in 1 Pizza and Karaoke Night at the      Boulder Creek Pizza & Pub
  • Tuesday 9/13 = School Picture Day
  • Thursday 9/15 = Parent Club Meeting (6:30 in our MP)
  • Friday 9/16 = BCE Ice Cream Social
  • Monday 10/10 = No School (Teacher Work Day)

Quote of the Week (Service):

"Education can equip us to make a difference, and perhaps it can orient us toward making a positive one."

                                                Howard Gardner

Did you know???

Thank you so much for getting your students to school, on time, every day!  There is a high correlation between student achievement and attendance.  Last year almost 20% of our students were absent for ten or more days and approximately 35% of our students were tardy ten or more days. Additionally, we have many students who lose important instructional time when they leave school early.  As you can see this quickly adds up to a lot of missed instructional time.  Good attendance is important for your student's success.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school and being on time every day!

Have a great 3-day weekend!
