BCE Bearmail 9/16/16

September 16, 2016

Dear BCE Families,

Ice Cream! ~ I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!  I hope to see many of you between 5 and 7 pm TODAY for our annual Ice Cream Social.  Remember the first scoop is free for all BCE students!

Great Evening! ~ It was fantastic to see so many of you at the first Parent Club meeting of the year last night!  We have the most amazing Parent Club here at BCE and I love that there are such a variety of ways for parents to be involved.   Our Parent Club provides so much for our school (field trips, school supplies, assemblies, technology, umbrellas for extra shade, etc.) Thank you for all you do and for all the support you provide the students of BCE.

Important Information for BCE Volunteers ~ Please click here to read an important letter from our Superintendent Laurie Bruton.  There are some significant changes to our school district's volunteer policy that will become effective November 1.  Thank you for supporting BCE students!

Armed Forces Families ~ The state of California is asking us to update our information concerning the number of Armed Forces families we have at BCE.  A student is considered to be an Armed Forces Family Member if at least one parent is an Armed Forces member, on active duty or serves on full-time National Guard duty.  If you are an Armed Forces family please click here to download our BCE Armed Forces Families data sheet.  Forms will also be available in the BCE office or your student's classroom.  Thank you for your support and service!

Drive for Schools ~ Would you like to win a car or $25,000 and support BCE?  Raffle tickets are $5.00 each or a book of 6 for $25.00.  Tickets will be available in the BCE office from September 15th through October 12.  You will also have the opportunity to purchase tickets at tonight's Ice Cream Social or the Santa Cruz Mountain Harvest Festival on the September 24. 100% of the proceeds from these raffle tickets support BCE!  Thank you for supporting our students!

It's All About Student Safety - PowerSchool Registration Reminder

Parents - If you have not submitted student online registration via PowerSchool, please take a few minutes to do so.

It is a matter of safety.

· We need to have the current and correct contact information via phone or email in order to contact you if your child becomes ill or has a medical or some other type of emergency while at school.

· We need to have the current and correct information for your emergency contacts in case you are not accessible.

This is why we ask you to complete the annual online registration for each of your students every year.  If you haven't checked to make sure all of your information is current and correct, please complete the PowerSchool Registration for each of your students as soon as possible.

How do you know if you've submitted your student's PowerSchool Registration? If you log into PowerSchool and click on the link for "PowerSchool Registration" and you do not see any forms available to you, then you have done an update. If, however, there are links to your child's online form, then your registration has not been updated.

If you need assistance setting up your parent PowerSchool account, you can come into your school office and Mrs. Steinberg can assist you in creating your account. Or, you can email Gail Heagerty at gheagerty@slvusd.org for assistance.

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

BCE PARENT CLUB EVENT & MEETING REMINDERS:

Thank you! – Thank you for supporting our first Family Dinner Night at Boulder Creek Pizza & Pub.  Justin is such an amazingly generous supporter of BCE and we are eternally grateful.  Unfortunately, our karaoke DJ had a last minute emergency and couldn't make it.  However, there was fabulous food and that always makes for a happy day!

Meeting notes – We had our first meeting last night and voted on a budget and calendar (which we'll send out soon).  We also voted in Diana Robertson and Elinor Slayer as this year's Co-Secretaries, Virginia Justus as our reconciliation Treasurer, Chrissy Dahl and Kat Gafford as our Co-Vice-Presidents, and Tammy Schultz as our President.  If you are someone who would be interested in being our bank treasurer or know of someone, please contact Tammy Schultz at the Parents Club email below.

Upcoming Events:

Ice Cream Social – The social event of the season is happening today from 5 pm to 7 pm on the blacktop on Uppers!  Run - don't walk - to get your delicious Marianne's ice cream scooped by our very own 5th graders!  All students get one free scoop.  Additional scoops are 50¢.  We will also be selling Spirit Wear and Drive For School Tickets.  Most importantly, you get the privilege of socializing with the most amazing folks in California – our BCE community.  Can't wait to see you there!

Drive For Schools Fundraiser – Do you know who would look good in a brand new car or fanning their face with $25,000?  YOU would!  Drive For Schools tickets are now on sale in the office, and they will be available at the Ice Cream Social and the Harvest Festival (September 24).  You can also fill out the request-for-tickets form that went home with your child, turn it in, and we'll send you the tickets.  Individual tickets are $5 and booklets of 6 tickets are only $25.  The best part is that 100% of the sales go directly to BCE. It's like handing your teacher a $5 donation (or more), but now you get a chance to win a car, money, or 100 other prizes.  So spread the word, because grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, neighbors all like chances to win prizes while supporting their local school!

Art Masterpiece – Congratulations!  Your beautiful child/children get the benefit of an amazing program this year – Art Masterpiece!  The program has been revamped this year to include a more diverse set of artists and media.  The orientation meeting has been set for Thursday, September 29 at 8:45 am in the office's back room.  This is a great opportunity for parents to make a huge difference in their child's classroom.  You don't need to be an artist or a teacher to be an excellent volunteer.  Please direct questions to Mary Beth Curley at marybethcurley@gmail.com.  If you are a parent or know of a parent in Ms. Eiriksson, Ms. Gibney, Ms. Rutter, or Ms. Wilson's class who could help out, please don't hesitate to contact Mary Beth to sign up.  Thank you volunteers!

Yearbook – Being on the yearbook committee is fun, easy, and leaves a lasting memory for your child to enjoy.  We will have two orientation meetings this year to choose from.  There will be a morning meeting on Monday, October 3 at 8:30 am in the back room of the office or you can attend the evening meeting on Tuesday, October 4 at 6:30 pm in the computer lab.  Thank you for being a part of this wonderful keepsake!
