BCE Bearmail 9/8/17

September 8, 2017

Dear BCE Families,

Back to School Night ~ Please join us on Thursday evening for our annual Back to School Night.  Remember this is an adult only evening.

            6:00 – 6:30 = Grades TK, K, 1 & 2

            6:40  - 6:55 = Welcome Families (Multi Purpose Room)

            7:00 – 7:30 = Grades 3, 4, 5 & SDC

Your students' amazing teachers are working hard to create an informative presentation for you.  I hope to see you all there!

School Pictures ~ All students will have their picture taken on Tuesday, September 12, both individually and with their class.  There is no obligation to purchase photographs, but if you would like to, you can send in payment with your student or pre-order online at mylifetouch.com and use the ID:  BY417062Q0.

Registration Letter ~ Please check your student's backpack this weekend.  If you have not updated your PowerSchool registration in your Parent Portal for the 2017-18 school year, your student received a letter today asking you to complete this important task. Directions to help guide you through the process are included in the letter.

Hurricane Harvey ~ Our 5th grade classes are organizing a fundraising drive for the victims of Hurricane Harvey.  Our compassionate students wanted to find a way to support the people along the Gulf Coast whose lives have been impacted by this disaster.  Our 5th graders will be raising money by doing chores for their families and friends and then donating their earnings to the relief fund.  The compassionate 5th graders realized that BCE could help even more if they asked all the other grades to join them in fundraising!  There will be a red box in the office where donations can be left.  Thank you for supporting and encouraging your student's work on behalf of others.

Label Items ~ Please take a moment this weekend to label your student's new Back to School lunch boxes, backpacks, jackets, etc.  I walked by one 5th grade class this week and there were three of the exact same backpack lined up all in a row!

Interested in Being a BCE Volunteer? ~ If you are new to SLVUSD or did not register to be a BCE volunteer last year, September is the month to complete the process.  Please read the 3 attachments to this newsletter and download and complete the Volunteer Agreement form.  Volunteer Sign-Up days will occur in the two hours prior to the start of each school's Back to School night.

Free and Reduced Lunch ~ Many families at BCE qualify for free and reduced price lunches, but may be unaware of it.  A family of four earning $45,510 or less qualifies.  If you have any questions or would like to complete a confidential application please come by the BCE office or visit www.slvusdcafe.org

Safety ~ We have a large number of students arriving before 8 am.  There is no on-campus supervision until 8:10 am.  For their safety, please do not drop children off before 8:10 am.

Empathy Quote of the Week :

"Empathy is about standing in someone else's shoes, feeling with his or her heart, seeing with his or her eyes.  Not only is empathy hard to outsource and automate, but it makes the world a better place."

                                                            ~Daniel H. Pink

Did you know???

Thank you so much for getting your students to school, and on time, every day!  There is a high correlation between student achievement and attendance.  Last year almost 20% of our students were absent for ten or more days and approximately 35% of our students were tardy ten or more days. Additionally, we have many students who lose important instructional time when they leave school early.   As you can see that adds up to a lot of missed instructional time.  Good attendance is important for your student's success.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school and being on time every day!

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

Box tops: You can help the school by collecting box tops!  There are drop boxes in every classroom as well as one in the office. They are collected monthly.  Proceeds go for P.E. equipment.  In the past we have made over $1,000 so start collecting because it really does add up.  Ask your friends and family to help as well!

Facebook: If you are on Facebook and haven't joined our Facebook group then sign-up by sending an e-mail to bcepc.execs@gmail.com  This is a private group so members must be invited and have a student enrolled at BCE. It is a great forum to ask questions, receive announcements and keep involved.

The Flyer Process for San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District is posted on the "home" page of the District website at www.slvusd.org.   The flyers and/or blurbs are no longer inserted into the school newsletters or distributed to the children.  The District is making an effort to reduce the amount of paper that is sent home with your child(ren) and is working together to streamline the newsletter so that you read about the most important information regarding your child's school.  The District has created a website where all of the approved flyers will be posted (Community Opportunity).
