BCE Bearmail 5/23/14

May 23, 2014

Dear BCE Families,

Reminder ~ Just a reminder that there will be no school on Monday.  Enjoy the long Memorial Day weekend and we'll see you back at BCE bright and early on Tuesday!

BCE Carnival ~ Another successful Carnival and Silent Auction is behind us!  What a fun and exciting day it was.  Thank you to our families who attended the Carnival and bid on items from the Silent Auction and a big THANK YOU goes out to all our families who donated their time and energies to working before during and after the big day to make it such a success.

Family Surveys ~ Today is the final day to complete our Family Survey so if you have not done so already, please go ahead and take 5 minutes to help us.  The information we get from the survey results is very important and allows us to refine what we do to better support our students and their families.  Attached you will find a link to complete the survey online; additionally we have hard copies available in the office.  THANK YOU!

Math Contest ~ Congratulations to Patrick Slayer, Connor Nolan, Cadie Peterson and Nathan Balducci for a 2nd place win in the team portion at the Santa Cruz County Math Competition!  Thank you to all of our students who practiced so hard and gave up their Saturday to participate.  I am so proud of all of you!  I also want to send a special thank you to Ms. Lopez and Ms. Foxworthy for coaching and supporting the team.

SLV Water District Grant ~ We are the proud recipients of the Classic Watershed Education Grant from our own SLV Water District.  This generous grant will provide full and partial scholarships for our 5th graders attending Science Camp.  Thank you Dusty Gipson for writing the grant and presenting the proposal to the Water Board.

Music Concert ~ You are invited to our 4th and 5th Grade Spring Music Concerts on Wednesday May 28th.  The schedule is as follows:  Foxworthy & Miller will perform from 8:45 – 9:30, Carson & Gibney from 10:30 – 11:15 and Muirhead & Conrad from 12:30 – 1:15

Speech Contest ~ Today was our 19th annual BCE Student Speech Contest.  The topic was "My Future With the BCE Way".  We had nine students selected from our 5th grade classrooms present their speech to an audience including a panel of judges.  It was an extremely difficult decision to make; all of the students were amazing.  I'm proud to congratulate our 1st place winner Brooke Berry, our 2nd place winner Donald Baker, our 3rd place winner Anna Seitz, and our 4th place winner Nicole Gavron.  Great Job BCE Bears!

Spectra ~  If your student is in kindergarten through 3rd grade, ask them about singing with Dizzy Burnett.  She has been our Spectra artist this week and the students have been having a great time!

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Safety Tip of the Week:

As schedules get busier and more hectic, it is helpful to your students if they know how they are getting home before they go to school.  If you have to change plans after school starts, please give the office staff enough time to send a message, so try to call before 1:30 pm.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

BCE PARENTS CLUB MESSAGE & EVENTS REMINDER:

What a crazy, fun week for our families!  Thanks to all who volunteered over the past week for Book Fair, Open House BBQ, Carnival and Silent Auction and those who donated items to the class gift baskets and silent auction.   It means a lot to our students.  These events could not have succeed without your help!!!

Please, please thank the following local businesses when you have the opportunity:
BOULDER CREEK BREWERY - They have generously donated all the hamburger, hot dogs and buns to the Carnival BBQ for the past 3 years.
BOULDER CREEK PIZZA - They have generously donated all the pizza to the Carnival Concessions for the past 3 years.
ERIC HAMMER CONSTRUCTION - They have been our personal assembly team for our carnival midway game booths for the past 4 years.  However, this year, they not only assembled them, they completely rebuilt the booths.  (Thanks to the families who painted!)
JOHNNIES - They have donated the ice for many of years and solely for the past 3.  This year they doubled the amount.
Next week, we will send out a flyer acknowledging all of our donors for the Carnival and Silent Auction.

FAMILY DINNER NIGHT:  Thursday, May 29, 4-9PM at Taqueria Los Amigos
The Taqueria will donated 20% of the night's proceeds to BCE Student Services.  Please support BCE by eating at our local Taqueria this coming Thursday.
