BCE Bearmail 10/28/16

                October 28, 2016

Dear BCE Families,

Halloween - There are a few guidelines regarding costumes.  Costumes should be in good taste and safely constructed so that they do not interfere with regular class activities.  Gruesome costumes and bloody, fake wounds are not appropriate for an elementary school.  Weapons (including fakes), skateboards and roller blades are not allowed as part of costumes.   If you are unsure, please contact your child's teacher or the office before purchasing the costume.  The Halloween Parade is slated for Monday, October 31 at 9:00 am on the upper playground.

Halloween Hunger? ~ Our own Boulder Creek Fire Department will be selling hot dogs and chili on Monday night.  These delicious treats will be available between 5 pm and 7 pm (trick or treat time) at the fire house. Proceeds will be split between BCE (5th grade Science Camp fund) and SLV Seniors. Thank you for your support BCFD!

Bryan Stow ~ Our TK, K and 1st grade students were treated to an assembly on Thursday presented by Bryan Stow.  Bryan spoke to our students about the importance of being an upstander not a bystander, how to lead by example and how to help people lead kinder lives. For more information about Brian Stow and his inspiring journey please visit: www.bryanstowfoundation.org.  We are in the process of planning a similar assembly for the older students.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony ~ On Tuesday morning there was a small ribbon cutting ceremony on Laurel Street to celebrate the completion of the construction in front of BCE and the Safe Route to School project.  Superintendent Bruton, together with three of our school board members and representatives from the Department of Public Works, joined Santa Cruz County Supervisor Bruce McPherson in dedicating the new safety features on Laurel Street to the health and welfare of the current and future students at Boulder Creek Elementary.  Everyone in attendance mentioned their gratitude for the patience and flexibility of our BCE families.  Thanks to all who worked so hard to get this important upgrade completed!

Parent Club ~ I hope you are able join me at our BCE Parent Club meeting on Thursday evening at 6:30 pm in the BCE Library.  We will be joined by our superintendent, Dr. Laurie Bruton, who will be sharing with us her "State of the District" presentation.  As parents and guardians of BCE students you are automatically a member of the BCE Parent Club.  Our parent club provides fun family nights and organizes fundraising events that support our BCE Bears.  I hope you can join us on Thursday and, as always, childcare will be provided.

Check It Out! ~ Have you noticed our new bulletin board located near the office?  We are recognizing all our students who have perfect attendance each month.

Important Calendar Information ~ Just a reminder that Family Conferences are the week of November 14 – 18 and we will be on a minimum day schedule.  TK and kindergarten will be dismissed at 11:50, 1st – 3rd will be dismissed at 12:10 pm and 4th and 5th graders will be dismissed at 12:15 pm.

Did you know???

It's always better to be safe than sorry.  If your students are going out trick or treating on Monday, please make sure they are in a group supervised by an adult and remind them not to eat any candy or treats until you've inspected them.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!
