BCE Bearmail 6/2/17

June 2, 2017

Dear BCE Families,

Wednesday ~ Just a reminder that next Wednesday will NOT be an Early Out day.  We will have a regular full day schedule on Wednesday, June 7.

Thursday ~ Thursday will be the last student day for the 2016-'17 school year.  Students in grades 1-5 will be dismissed at 12:15 pm.  Kindergartners will be dismissed at their regular time of 11:50 am.  Please note that there will be no kindergarten bus; kindergarten students may ride the regular school buses that will depart from BCE at 12:20 pm.

Speech Contest ~ Our annual BCE speech contest was held today and as always it was a huge success.  There were twelve 5th graders who spoke on the theme of, "Perseverance."  Their speeches were heart-felt, inspiring and it was evident that a lot of thought and care was put into their work.   A special thank you to Mrs. Branson for coordinating our 22nd annual speech contest and congratulations to all our participants.

I'd like to recognize our top four finishers:

1.    Karen Gourlay

2.    Gaiya Wilms Paul

3.    Zachary Schiermeyer

4.    Jacob Atilla

Well done!

Thank You! ~ I would like to acknowledge and thank Valley Churches United for their generous donation of $500 to support our 5th graders going to Science Camp. Their generous donation helps us ensure that no 5th grader will not be able to attend Science Camp due to financial need. Thank you for supporting BCE!

4th Grade Families ~ Please click here to read an important message regarding our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program for our 5th grade students.

Good Information ~ Please click here to read some excellent information about the importance of supervising and limiting your student's screen time.

Library ~ The BCE library is closed for the school year.  Please return any library books your student still may have. Payment for lost or damaged books can be made in the office.  Thank you!

Lost & Found ~ Our lost and found pile continues to grow!  Please come by and take a look to see if anything belongs to your student.  Any items left after the last day of school will be donated to charity.

Need Kindergarten? ~ Kindergarten registration for fall 2017 opened on March 15.  To begin the registration process, please plan on bringing your child's birth certificate, immunization record and proof of address (e.g. utility bill with your name and address).  For more information contact Alma, our Registrar - asteinberg@slvusd.org.

Children must be five years old by September 1 in order to enroll in Kindergarten.  If your student has a September, October or November birthday you might be interested in our Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program.  For more information please click here or call the BCE office at 831-338-6413.

We're looking forward to your student joining our BCE learning community!

Quote of the Week

"One benefit of summer was that each day we had more light to read by."

~ Jeannette Walls

Did you know???

Studies show that by reading four or five books during the summer, elementary students can avoid reading achievement losses that normally occur over these months.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

The Flyer Process for San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District is posted on the "home" page of the District website at www.slvusd.org.   The flyers and/or blurbs are no longer inserted into the school newsletters or distributed to the children.  The District is making an effort to reduce the amount of paper that is sent home with your child(ren) and is working together to streamline the newsletter so that you read about the most important information regarding your child's school.  The District has created a website where all of the approved flyers will be posted (Community Opportunity).
