BCE Bearmail 6/1/18

June 1, 2018

Dear BCE Families,

Please help! ~ The Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) is currently soliciting input from students, parents, and staff at the San Lorenzo Valley schools on the Highway 9-San Lorenzo Valley Corridor Transportation Plan. The RTC is specifically seeking feedback on the area of Highway 9 around the schools.

Please consider taking this survey and providing your valuable input on this important community project:

Speech Contest ~ Our annual BCE speech contest was held yesterday and as always it was a huge success.  There were ten 5th graders who spoke on the theme of, "Humor: An Important Lifeskill."  Their speeches were heart-felt, inspiring and it was evident that a lot of thought and care was put into their work.   A special thank you to Mrs. Branson for coordinating our 23rd annual speech contest and congratulations to all our participants.

I'd like to recognize our top four finishers:

1.     Stella Athenais

2.     Ryah Johnston

3.     Rhiannon Lawton

4.     Keegan Hickey

Well done!

Library ~ The BCE library is closed for the school year.  Please return any library books your student still may have.  Payment for lost or damaged books can be made in the office.  Thank you!

Beyblades ~ Due to ongoing theft and conflict, students will no longer be allowed to play with Beyblades at school.  Beyblades should be left at home where they are safe and sound and can be enjoyed in a relaxed atmosphere.  Thank you for your support!

4TH Grade Families ~ Please click here to read an important message regarding our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program for our 5th grade students.

End of year ~ As the end of the year approaches we can feel the summer energy increase.  Please help your student make the most of these last days of school by keeping to a routine as much as possible and reminding them how important their job as a student is.

Need Kindergarten? ~ Kindergarten registration for Fall 2018 is open.  Visit the BCE office to pick up a registration packet and begin the process. You can expedite the registration process by bringing your child's Birth Certificate, Immunization Record and Proof of Residency with you on your first visit.

Children must be five years old by September 1 in order to enroll in Kindergarten.  If your student has a September, October or November birthday you might be interested in our Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program.  For more information please call the BCE office at 831-338-6413.

We're looking forward to your student joining our BCE learning community!

Empathy Quote of the Week:

"Change begins with understanding and understanding begins by identifying oneself with another person: in a word, empathy. The arts enable us to put ourselves in the minds, eyes, ears and hearts of other human beings."

~ Richard Eyre

Did you know???

Children in every income group who read six or more books over the summer gain more in reading achievement than children who do not.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we continue to have assemblies and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. BCE has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

BCE PARENT CLUB EVENT & MEETING REMINDERS:

Next Meeting: Remember that all of us are Parents Club members just by having our children enrolled at BCE. Join us for our last meeting of this school year on June 7, 2018 in the school library from 6-8 PM; we will be wrapping up this year and previewing some exciting events/happenings for our Fall 150th BCE Anniversary. Babysitting and light snacks/tea always provided.

If you haven't joined our Facebook Group, and would like to, you can sign-up by sending an email to bcepc.execs@gmail.com  This is a private group so members must be invited and have a student enrolled at BCE.  It is a great forum to ask questions, receive announcements and stay involved.

The Flyer Process for San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District is posted on the "home" page of the District website at www.slvusd.org.   The flyers and/or blurbs are no longer inserted into the school newsletters or distributed to the children.  The District is making an effort to reduce the amount of paper that is sent home with your child(ren) and is working together to streamline the newsletter so that you read about the most important information regarding your child's school.  The District has created a website where all of the approved flyers will be posted (Community Opportunity).
