BCE Bearmail 3/28/14

March 28, 2014

Dear BCE Families,

Spring Break ~ Just a reminder that next week is Spring Break and there will be no school.  We’ll see you back here on Monday April 7th

Amazon ~ Our Parent Club has joined the Amazon Smile program.  Signing up is easy!  All you need to do is go to smile.amazon.com or click on the Amazon Smile button on our Parent Club home page (https://sites.google.com/site/bceparentsclub/).  After you sign up all you need to do is go to the smile.amazon.com page and shop as usual.  A percentage of every purchase made through Smile Amazon will be donated to BCE.  For more information please check out our Parent Club home page or visit smile.amazon.com

State Testing ~ Starting after Spring Break we will begin our testing window.  All 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will participate in the field test of the Smarter Balance assessment.  A field test is just a test of the assessment itself and the process of giving the assessment.  There will be no scores either for individual students or for BCE as a whole.  The students and teachers have been working on practice tests and we’re ready to get started!  The testing consists of approximately 45 minutes to an hour a day for 5 days. Our 5th graders will test on April 8, 9, 23, 24, 25.  The 4th graders will test the week of April 14th and the 3rd graders will test the week of the 28th.   All testing will be done in our computer lab with some classes piloting the iPads for part of their testing time.

The test will be challenging in both content and technology for most students.  Please remind them that everyone is in the same boat and we are really lucky to have this opportunity to let the test makers know what the experts (our students) think.  We’re keeping the mood light and focusing on the fun of trying new things together as a group!

Thanks you so much for supporting your students!

Testing Snacks ~ While we’re on the subject of testing… We have found that during highly focused activities students perform much better when we provide snacks before the testing period.  If you would like to help out and donate snacks for your class, it would be greatly appreciated. We are requesting snacks such as pretzels, goldfish crackers, cheese sticks, raisins, granola bars, or perhaps fruit slices. We would also like some water bottles and juice boxes. Please avoid snacks containing peanuts.  Snack time is much easier if the snacks are in individual packets, you could either buy individual packs or bring snacks in Ziploc bags.

Thanks for your help, it's always appreciated.

Attendance Facts:

School attendance is a baseline factor in determining student success.  Are you supporting your student’s academic success?  If you are struggling with this issue, please let us know, we’d love to be able to work with you to solve this important issue.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Safety Tip of the Week:

Hybrid cars are often very quiet and can be hard to hear when they are moving.  Please reinforce how important it is for your students to keep their eyes open and alert for moving vehicles.

Wishing you all a wonderful Spring Break!
