BCE Bearmail 5/18/18

May 18, 2018

Dear BCE Families,

BCE Carnival ~ Another successful Carnival and Silent Auction is behind us!  What a fun and exciting day it was.  Thank you to our families who attended the Carnival and bid on items from the Silent Auction. A big THANK YOU goes out to Laurel Johnson, Tammy Schultz, Chrissy Dahl, Amber Jones, Kat Gafford, and all our families who donated their time and energies to working before, during and after the big day to make it such a success.

I am so grateful for our amazing BCE Parent Club and all the families that support us.  Your fundraising efforts provide field trips, classroom supplies and many extras that our students and staff benefit from.  Additionally, the community building that comes along with the events you sponsor is priceless.  There are always way too many volunteers to thank individually so to you all THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Band Festival ~ I'd like to invite you to the 8th Annual SLVUSD "District-Wide Band Festival" on May 30 at 7 pm in the SLVHS Gym.  This is the one time during the year that you can hear the SLE, BCE, SLVMS and SLVHS bands all in one place.  It's a fun way to celebrate how hard we've worked this year (or more) as well as see the progression from elementary through high school. Our finale for the evening will feature all 150+ performers playing together which is something you just have to see/hear to believe!  The event is free but donations will be accepted and there will be a $5 hot-dog dinner available at 6 pm.  I hope you'll consider joining me for this fun evening of music!  Click here for more information.

Family Survey ~ It's that time of year again!  Please take a moment to complete our Family Survey.  The information we receive from the survey guides us in our plans for next school year.  Thank you for your time.

Bookshop Santa Cruz ~ Encouraging

your student to read over the summer can seem daunting.  Fortunately,

Bookshop Santa Cruz has a great Summer Reading Program to help inspire

your students to read over

the summer break. To participate, your students need a bookmark that can

 be downloaded from,

https://www.bookshopsantacruz.com/summer-reading-program

or

picked up at Bookshop Santa Cruz. After each student reads 6 books,

three from the bookmark and three of their own choice, they receive a $5

gift card from Bookshop, a scoop of ice cream

from Penny Ice Creamery, a slice of pizza from Pizza My Heart as well

as a great prize from the Santa Cruz Warriors. It is absolutely

free to participate, you are not required to purchase any of the books from Bookshop.

On

top of helping encourage students to read over the summer your school

can win great prizes if they have the most students participate.

Bookshop gives

a gift card to the school librarian for the top participating small

school and top participating large school.

This

year we are adding an exciting new prize, the opportunity to

participate in a "Grab and Dash". The top schools will each receive the

chance for one

lucky child to win a "Grab and Dash" experience at Bookshop Santa Cruz.

They can take home whatever they can carry in 45 seconds, making

multiple trips to the base to drop products until their time runs out.

Children's books are all up for dibs in this exciting

challenge a child will never forget.

Empathy Quote of the Week:

"Learning is a result of listening, which in turn leads to even better listening and attentiveness to the other person. In other words, to learn from the child, we must have empathy, and empathy grows as we learn."

~ Alice Miller

Did you know???

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that you teach your kids healthy habits. You can help your students develop skills to make safe and healthy choices every day. These include fastening seat belts, wearing helmets, applying sunscreen, brushing teeth, washing hands, forming healthy relationships, and more. Make safe and healthy choices every day to show kids how to do it.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we continue to have assemblies and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. BCE has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

The Flyer Process for San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District is posted on the "home" page of the District website at www.slvusd.org.   The flyers and/or blurbs are no longer inserted into the school newsletters or distributed to the children.  The District is making an effort to reduce the amount of paper that is sent home with your child(ren) and is working together to streamline the newsletter so that you read about the most important information regarding your child's school.  The District has created a website where all of the approved flyers will be posted (Community Opportunity).
