BCE Bearmail 5/4/18

May the 4th Be With You!  (Happy Star Wars Day!)

Dear BCE Families,

Student Author Fair ~ I hope you can make plans to attend the Student Author Fair at Capitola Mall tomorrow from 10 am - 3 pm.  Many of our BCE classes will be represented at this fun event and students will have the opportunity to read their original work aloud to an audience.  See you there!

Open House ~ I hope to see all of you next Tuesday, May 8, for our annual BCE Open House!  The fun begins at 5:00 pm with our Parent Club BBQ and the opening of our Art Masterpiece display in the MP.  The Book Fair opens at 6:00 pm and the ukulele and band performance will run from 5:45 pm – 6:20 pm.   Classrooms and the Science Lab will be open from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm.

Book Fair ~ The books are here, the books are here!  Our Spring Book Fair will be open in the library all next week.  Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8 am – 5 pm, Tuesday 8 am - 4:30 pm and 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm, and Friday 8 am – 3:30 pm.  Thank you for supporting BCE and your student's literacy.

Yearbook orders ~ have been extended until the end of Open House on Tuesday, May 8! Yearbooks are $20. Checks can be made out to BCE Parent Club.

Carnival Help ~ The BCE Carnival is coming up next week and as always promises to be lots of fun for everyone.  An event this amazing requires lots of support.  Please see the Parent Club section below to see how you can help support our school community.

Family Art Night ~ Thank you to our Amazing BCE Parent Club, Santa Cruz County Arts Council and Lani Egbert for helping to support and coordinate the wonderful Family Art Night we enjoyed last Friday. When you combine the arts, families, and pizza, you know it's going to be a good night!

Breakfast Club ~ Student Nutrition Services (SNS) want me to let you know that next year our Breakfast Club will be changing.  Unfortunately, it will be necessary for SNS to begin charging for breakfast just as they do for lunch.  Families that are part of our free and reduced price lunch program will continue to receive both breakfast and lunch at no cost or the reduced cost (30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch).  Our BCE Breakfast Club will continue being available, at no cost, for all students for the rest of this school year.

Please help ~ Please return the yellow form you received asking if your student will be returning to BCE next year.  That information is critical to our staffing plan.  Thank you for your help.

3rd, 4th & 5th Grade Families ~ Practice and Training Tests for 2017–18 Are Here!  Exciting news for classroom teachers, parents, and students: Smarter Balanced has updated its online Practice Tests and Training Tests, adding new items and passages.  This website is an easy and low stress way to explore the upcoming state test with your student.

Need Kindergarten? ~ Kindergarten registration for Fall 2018 is open.  Visit the BCE office to pick up a registration packet and sign up for a spot to attend our final Kindergarten orientation and tour.  The final tour will take place at 9 am on May 18.  To begin the registration process, please plan on bringing your child's Birth Certificate, Immunization Record and Proof of Residency with you.

Children must be five years old by September 1 in order to enroll in Kindergarten.  If your student has a September, October or November birthday you might be interested in our Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program.  For more information, please call the Alma in the BCE office at 831-338-6413.

We're looking forward to your student joining our BCE learning community!

Absences ~ If your student will be absent from school due to illness, or for any other reason, please call the BCE Attendance Line at 831-338-2887.  Please call every day until your student returns and let us know how their recovery is going.

Empathy Quote of the Week :

"On many issues empathy can pull us in the wrong direction.  The outrage that comes from adopting the perspective of a victim can drive an appetite for retribution"

~ Paul Bloom

Did you know???

It is important to make sure your voicemail mailbox is not full.  Several times each week we try to reach parents with information regarding their students only to find out that we can't leave a message because the mailbox is full.  Thank you for helping us keep your student safe!

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we continue to have assemblies and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. BCE has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

Countdown to Carnival -Carnival is in a week- Saturday May 12th, 10:30-3:30!! This is our biggest fundraiser and we hope to make it our best Carnival yet. There are quite a few blank volunteer spots on the sign ups posted outside each of the classrooms for volunteers to help with the Big Event.  If every parent volunteers for 1-2 hours we can give the kids a super fun Carnival. If you aren't able to sign up because you do not drop -off or pick- up on campus, send us an email at bcpcexecs@gmail.com and we will sign up for you.  Plan to attend and help with a game or selling concessions to help make this a memorable day for everyone. Tell your friends and family - the more the merrier!

Silent Auction: We have collected items for the classroom baskets for silent auction. Thank you for your thoughtful and creative donations!  We are still accepting late donations, please turn them into the office. If you feel like making your own basket, we will gladly accept it! Please plan on stopping by Silent Auction and prepare to be wow'd by the amazing items donated.  Goat Yoga birthday party? Ride to school on a Fire Truck? We will be voting our Board Members for the 2018-2019 school year at our next meeting, May 10, 2018. We need volunteers from this year's Kinder, 1st and 3rd grades; this is your school and your children's experience. Please consider joining us at the Parent Club meetings, or chairing some events/committees. We currently need a Treasurer, Secretary and Vice President. Time commitment varies but minimally consists of the monthly meeting and additional duties depending on the position. Please ask questions/contact us if you are interested, bcepc.execs@gmail.com.

If you haven't joined our Facebook Group, and would like to, you can sign-up by sending an email to bcepc.execs@gmail.com  This is a private group so members must be invited and have a student enrolled at BCE.  It is a great forum to ask questions, receive announcements and stay involved.

The Flyer Process for San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District is posted on the "home" page of the District website at www.slvusd.org.   The flyers and/or blurbs are no longer inserted into the school newsletters or distributed to the children.  The District is making an effort to reduce the amount of paper that is sent home with your child(ren) and is working together to streamline the newsletter so that you read about the most important information regarding your child's school.  The District has created a website where all of the approved flyers will be posted (Community Opportunity).
