BCE Bearmail 2/5/16

February 5, 2016

Dear BCE Families,

Three day weekend ~ Just a reminder that this is the first of two three day weekends.  There will be no school Monday as we celebrate Lincoln's birthday.

CONGRATULATIONS TO STAFF, STUDENTS, AND PARENTS

The San Lorenzo Unified School District was notified on Thursday, February 4, 2016 that Boulder Creek Elementary has received the California Gold Ribbon School award. BCE scored well above the point requirements on the evaluation process to receive the award. We will not be required to participate in a site verification visit that is normally required after the submission of an application for the Gold Ribbon School award. We are very proud of the work and dedication that exemplifies the excellence at Boulder Creek Elementary.  We also wish to congratulate the staff, students and parents at San Lorenzo Valley Elementary who are also recipients of the California Gold Ribbon School award.  Go SLVUSD!

Valentine's Day ~ As February rolls in we start thinking about Valentine's Day.  Please remember that if your student brings a Valentine card for 1 student in the class, they need to bring cards for all the students in their class.  Valentine's Day is not a day for hurt feelings and hearts.

Pennies for Patients ~ Our wonderful student leadership group has organized a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Each classroom has a small cardboard box where students and families can deposit change.  The idea behind Pennies for Patients is that our small change can make a BIG change for people with leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers.  Thank you for encouraging your students as they demonstrate their generosity and compassion.

Helping Your Child with Math Homework ~ Thank you BCE and SLE families for responding to our survey about your child and math at home. Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, March 1, 6 - 7:30 pm for an interactive night of elementary math. Mrs. Myers from SLVE and Mrs. Ebrahimian from BCE will be presenting information and doing activities based upon your survey responses. The event will be held on the Quail Hollow campus. Some of the many topics covered will be: helping your child work through the problem, ways to communicate with your child and not give away the answer, and clarification on common core math. All elementary families, K-5, are invited to attend since topics are helpful at any age. Please RSVP by clicking on the following link so we can get a general head count:

Feel free to come even if you don't RSVP. This is an adult only event - no children, please.

Did you know???

California law states that children under 8 must be properly buckled into a car seat or booster seat in the back seat.  Children 8 or older, or those that are 4'9" may use the vehicles safety belt if it fits properly.

Wishing you all a wonderful three day weekend!

The Flyer Process for San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District is posted on the "home" page of the District website at www.slvusd.org.   The flyers and/or blurbs are no longer inserted into the school newsletters or distributed to the children.  The District is making an effort to reduce the amount of paper that is sent home with your child(ren) and is working together to streamline the newsletter so that you read about the most important information regarding your child's school.  The District has created a website where all of the approved flyers will be posted (Community Opportunity).
