BCE Bearmail 12/9/16

December 9, 2016

Dear BCE Families,

THANK YOU ~ Thank you all for your generous donations to the Gift Shift. What a great example of kindness and compassion you are for our students. The smiles on the faces of our students and families and the joy they had when they left with gifts for their loved ones are truly the spirit of the holiday!  Thank you so very much to Katie Booth and her team for all their hard work and for keeping this BCE tradition alive and supporting our families.

Bell Choir ~ During the School Board meeting on Thursday evening those attending enjoyed a lovely performance by the BCE/SLE Bell Choir.  What a treat to be able to enjoy beautiful music performed by our valley's elementary students.  Many thanks to our amazing music teacher Carey Liston for making the concert possible.

Support ~ Thank you for your support as we maneuver our way through the holiday season.  Holidays can be an amazing and magical time of the year and they can also be tiring and stressful.  With two weeks of school left, please keep their routine as close to normal as possible, make sure they have plenty of sleep, and their diet is healthy and low in sugar.  Our amazing teachers still have a lot of learning planned for your student and we want our BCE Bears ready to do their important work!  Thank you.

Pokemon Go ~ For students safety, Pokemon Go or other electronic games are not allowed to be played at school even after the dismissal bell has rung.  This past week we have had students running back and forth across campus and almost into parking lots and streets while their head is down looking at a screen.  Students have run into each other and there have been some close calls between primary and upper grade students when one didn't see the other.  Thank you for helping us get the word out to all our students.  We appreciate all you do to keep our kids safe.

Science Fair ~ Just a reminder that the BCE Science Fair will be taking place February 1 – 3, 2017.  All students from kindergarten through 5th grade are invited to participate.  For more information visit http://bce.slvusd.org/student-activities/science-fair or contact our wonderful science teacher Patty Hayes.  Completed application forms can be returned to the office by December 16.

Canned Food Drive ~ The Valley Christmas Project Canned Food Drive is continuing.  Please send in your non-perishable donations to help support families in our community.  This is a great opportunity for our children to discover the good feeling we receive when we do good things for others.

Quote of the Week (Responsibility):

"I've always been in the right place at the right time.  Of course, I steered myself there."

~ Bob Hope

Did you know???

Missing 2 weeks of class time each year in primary school year means a total of 14 weeks teaching time missed— this could have a real impact on basic student literacy and math skills.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

BCE PARENT CLUB EVENT & MEETING REMINDERS:

Holiday Gift ShiftOur Holiday Gift Shift is happening today!!   Make your way over to the Multi-purpose room from noon to 6 pm.  Parents can get free items to give as holiday presents to their children, and students can go with their adult to grab free items to give as sibling or parent gifts.  Gift -wrapping is also available!

Holiday Shopping – As you shop this holiday season, please consider purchasing from Amazon Smile rather than Amazon.  It's a website that's identical to Amazon.com, but your purchases count toward donations to BCE.  If you haven't set up BCE as your recipient yet, don't worry – it only takes a few seconds.

Family Dinner Night - Wednesday, December 14 is the perfect day for a meal out at the amazing Boulder Creek Pizza & Pub. You'll get a night free from cooking, your tummy will get its delight of the week, and the 3rd grade classes of BCE will benefit from the proceeds. As always, thank you for your support!

BCE Parents Club Facebook Group - BCE Parents Club will be launching its very own Facebook Group!  We are looking for volunteers who would be interested in sharing the administrative duties of managing a large group like this. If you are interested please contact Chrissy Dahl at dahl.christine@gmail.com.  Ideally we would like 5-7 administrators to share the approval of posts and content to this wonderful addition to BCE social life!

Science Fair – Don't forget to get in your application for the Science Fair by December 16th. Our event will take place from February 1 – 3, 2017!

Bingo Night – Game night is on!! Mark your calendars for one of BCE's favorite nights – Friday, January 13th from 6:30 to 8:30!  Bingo will be happening with prizes for adults and children alike. This event also includes a 5th grade bake sale.  We would love to have any donated items for our prize selection – so, if you or your child happen to get a present this holiday that doesn't quite suit you, but may suit another, please consider donating to our Bingo prize table.  We could also use a few volunteers for the event.  Please contact the Parents Club at bcepc.execs@gmail.com.

Family Dinner Night - Join us on Wednesday, December 14 for a fabulous meal at Boulder Creek Pizza & Pub.  The proceeds will benefit BCE students and the pizza will benefit your tummy!

The Flyer Process for San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District is posted on the "home" page of the District website at www.slvusd.org.   The flyers and/or blurbs are no longer inserted into the school newsletters or distributed to the children.  The District is making an effort to reduce the amount of paper that is sent home with your child(ren) and is working together to streamline the newsletter so that you read about the most important information regarding your child's school.  The District has created a website where all of the approved flyers will be posted (Community Opportunity).
