BCE Bearmail 11/17/17

November 17, 2017

Dear BCE Families,

Thanksgiving Holiday ~ Please remember that our Thanksgiving break begins Monday and there will be no school next week from 11/20 – 11/24.  I wish all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving and I for one will be giving thanks for having the privilege of working with our amazing students, fabulous families, and sensational staff!

Hot Off the Press! ~ Here is your next installment in a series of articles written especially for SLVUSD by our wonderful Mental Health Counselor, Jen Sims. Her articles address subjects that support the growth and well being of our students and all of us that support our BCE Bears.  Please click here to read Jen's article on empathy with a focus on listening.

Triple P ~ Our final Triple P Parenting Seminar has been rescheduled for Thursday November 30! I hope you are able to join this powerful group as you work together to support your family. The focus of this next class will be "Raising Resilient Children." Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) is a program of First 5.  All seminars are free of charge and childcare is provided.  BCE has hosted Triple P seminars and groups in the past and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.  Please click here to view the flyer that contains additional information.

Lost and Found ~ Any items left on our lost and found racks after December 1 will be removed and donated to a local charity.  Thank You!

Family Science Night ~ It was wonderful that so many of you were able to attend our Family Science Night last week.  What a wonderful Parent Club we have to organize such an educational and magical event!  A big shout out and thank you to all the parent volunteers who made it happen.  How lucky we are to have a community that supports our students in so many ways!

BCE's Holiday Gift Shift ~ Please mark your calendar for the annual BCE Gift Shift, on Friday December 8, 12:30 - 6:00. We will be collecting gently used toys, books, videos, and video games; however, we do not accept clothing items.  This year we will also have a section with items suitable for children to give to adults.  Donations can be delivered to the Office at Boulder Creek Elementary starting the week after Thanksgiving Vacation.  We will set up everything on Thursday, December 7.

Substance Abuse: A Conversation with Educators and Experts - Nov. 30 SLV High School
We welcome parents from all SLV schools to join us Thursday, November 30 at 6:00 pm in the SLV High School Multi-Purpose Room for a discussion about substance abuse among teens. Sergeant Nicholas Baldridge from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department will be presenting on current drug trends in our youth population and within Santa Cruz County. Mary Clark, Adolescent Admission Counselor from the CAMP Recovery Center, will follow with a presentation on drug treatment options and resources for adolescents in our area. She will be available to field questions and provide follow up for any families that have concerns and possible immediate needs. We will close with Dr. Amy Solomon, Board Certified Addiction Specialist and Family Doctor serving the San Lorenzo Valley since 1996, to discuss the risk factors leading to substance abuse and handouts to help you start collecting your own thoughts on the subject.  Whether you are working through these types of issues with a teen or just want to be more informed, please come and get some useful information.

Canned Food Drive ~ The Valley Christmas Project Canned Food Drive is up and running.  Please send in your non-perishable donations to help support families in our community.  This is a great opportunity for our children to discover the good feeling we receive when we do good things for others.

Empathy Quote of the Week :

"Measuring success in cultural diplomacy – the use of education, creative expression in any form, or people-to-people exchange to increase understanding across regions, cultures, or peoples – is challenging.  How does one quantify changes in attitude, abandoning stereotypes, or feeling empathy as a result of a performance, a film, a book?"

                                                            ~ Cynthia P Schneider

Did you know???

Just by being present at school, your child is learning how to be a good citizen by participating in the school community, learning valuable social skills, and developing a broader worldview.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving Break!

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we continue to have assemblies and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. BCE has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

BCE PARENT CLUB EVENT & MEETING REMINDERS:

Rescheduled: The last PPP class in the three part series has been rescheduled to Thursday November 30, 6-8  PM in the BCE library.  Pizza and childcare provided.

Upcoming Fundraiser: The ARTterie in town is offering a Christmas Ornament and Ceramic Painting event that will benefit BCE art and science program! The dates are this Saturday November 18 or next Saturday November 25, from 2:30-5:30 ranging in price from $5-$20.  All ages are welcome.  Fifty percent of proceeds will go to BCE.  Artwork will be available for pick-up two weeks after painting.  For more information contact Inez at the ARTterie at 831-218-5846, www.artterie.com or facebook.com/artterie

Holiday Gift Shift: We are gearing up for our Annual Gift Shift taking place all day on December 8 in the MP Room. This is a very special event where the MP Room is transformed into a store where kids can go shopping for their family members. Gift wrapping is provided on site. For this event to be a success we need donations of new or gently used items such as toys, book, stuffed animals etc. If you are interested in volunteering for this event please contact Kaytie Booth at kaytiebooth@gmail.com

Family Dinner Night: There will be two family dinner nights in December! The first one is at the Red Pearl on December 5.  This fundraiser will benefit the Science Program. The second dinner night is at the Pizza and Pub and includes Trivia!  This will take place December 19 and proceeds benefit 4th grade. The times will be on the December calendar that will be distributed after the fall break.

Fundraiser Results: Thanks to your support our recent fundraisers have been hugely successful!  The Dinner Night in September at Pizza and Pub earned $750 for 5th grade!  The Ice Cream Social made $880 which is awesome because it is meant to be more of a community event than a fundraiser.  Dinner Night at Boulder Creek Country Club brought in $254 for TK/K.

Parents Club meeting: Our next meeting  is scheduled for Thursday, December 14, 6-8 PM in the BCE library!  Childcare is always provided.  We hope you can make it!

Yearbook: If you have pictures to share from Ice Cream Social, class field trips  or Family Science Night please share!  Create a log-in and upload your pix to: https://link.entourageyearbooks.com/welcome.asp?action=photos&yearbook_id=22741&guid=   Or email: bcepc.yearbook@gmail.com to get in touch.

Amazon Smiles:  Shop Amazon Smiles for your holiday needs. We have raised $1,046 since August 2017 with this program!  If you haven't signed up simply go to www.smile.amazon.com to sign up for this program.  You do not have to have a student enrolled at BCE to sign-up so be sure to tell family and friends to sign-up too!  Please note that this does not work on the Amazon app on your phone!

Box tops: Please continue to collect those box tops!  We raised $300 from our first collection last month!  Congratulations to room 4, they won for most box tops collected and have earned a pizza party for their class!  The next box top deadline is Friday December 15.  The prize for the months of November/December will be determined and announced January 2018.

Facebook: If you are on Facebook and haven't joined our Facebook group then sign-up by sending an email to bcepc.execs@gmail.com  This is a private group so members must be invited and have a student enrolled at BCE.  It is a great forum to ask questions, receive announcements and stay involved. We have grown to 287 members since the group began.

The Flyer Process for San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District is posted on the "home" page of the District website at www.slvusd.org.   The flyers and/or blurbs are no longer inserted into the school newsletters or distributed to the children.  The District is making an effort to reduce the amount of paper that is sent home with your child(ren) and is working together to streamline the newsletter so that you read about the most important information regarding your child's school.  The District has created a website where all of the approved flyers will be posted (Community Opportunity).
