BCE Bearmail 12/11/17

December 11, 2017

Dear BCE Families,

Apologies ~ So sorry the Bearmail is late - we have had no internet since Friday morning at 9 am.

THANK YOU ~ Thank you all for your generous donations to the Gift Shift. What a great example of kindness and compassion you are for our students.  The smiles on the faces of our students and families and the joy they had when they left with gifts for their loved ones are truly the spirit of the holiday!  Thank you so very much to Kaytie Booth and her team for all their hard work and for keeping this BCE tradition alive and supporting our families.

Hot Off the Press! ~ Here is your next installment in a series of articles written especially for SLVUSD by our wonderful Mental Health Counselor, Jen Sims. Her articles address subjects that support the growth and well being of our students and all of us that support our BCE Bears.  Please click here to read Jen's article on self-awareness, toxic shame and empathy.

Support ~ Thank you for your support as we maneuver our way through the holiday season.  Holidays can be an amazing and magical time of the year and they can also be tiring and stressful. With two weeks of school left, please keep your students' routine to as close to normal as possible, make sure they have plenty of sleep, and their diet is healthy and low in sugar.  Our amazing teachers still have a lot of learning planned for your students and we want our BCE Bears ready to do their important work!  Thank you.

Science Fair ~ Just a reminder that the BCE Science Fair will be taking place January 31 – February 2, 2018.  All students from kindergarten through 5th grade are invited to participate.  For more information visit http://bce.slvusd.org/student-activities/science-fair or contact Karen Hoogner at 831-703-4750 / hoogner@yahoo.com, or Patty Hayes (BCE Science Teacher) at phayes@slvusd.org.

Completed application forms should be returned to the office by December 15.

Canned Food Drive ~ The Valley Christmas Project Canned Food Drive is ongoing.  Please send in your non-perishable donations to help support families in our community.  This is a great opportunity for our children to discover the good feeling we receive when we do good things for others.

Calendar Note ~ Just a heads up that Winter Break will begin on a Friday this year.  The last day of school for 2017 will be Thursday December 21; Friday December 22 is a school holiday.

Empathy Quote of the Week :

"The story is a machine for empathy.  In contrast to logic or reason, a story is about emotion that gets staged over a sequence of dramatic moments, so you empathize with the characters, without really thinking about it too much.  It is a really powerful tool for imagining yourself in other people's situations."

                                                            ~ Ira Glass

Did you know???

Missing 2 weeks of class time each year in primary school means a total of 14 weeks teaching time missed— this could have a real impact on student basic literacy and math skills.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we continue to have assemblies and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. BCE has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

The Flyer Process for San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District is posted on the "home" page of the District website at www.slvusd.org.   The flyers and/or blurbs are no longer inserted into the school newsletters or distributed to the children.  The District is making an effort to reduce the amount of paper that is sent home with your child(ren) and is working together to streamline the newsletter so that you read about the most important information regarding your child's school.  The District has created a website where all of the approved flyers will be posted (Community Opportunity).
