BCE Bearmail 12/1/17

December 1, 2017

Dear BCE Families,

Science Fair ~ Just a reminder that the BCE Science Fair will be taking place January 31 – February 2 2018.  All students from kindergarten through 5th grade are invited to participate.  For more information visit http://bce.slvusd.org/student-activities/science-fair or contact Karen Hoogner at 831-703-4750 / hoogner@yahoo.com, or Patty Hayes (BCE Science Teacher) at phayes@slvusd.org.

Completed application forms should be returned to the office by December 15.

BCE's Holiday Gift Shift Please mark your calendar for the annual BCE Gift Shift, on Friday December 8, 12:30 - 6:00. We will be collecting gently used toys, books, videos, and video games; however, we do not accept clothing items.  This year we will also have a section with items suitable for children to give to adults.  Donations can be delivered to the Office at Boulder Creek Elementary.  We will set up everything on Thursday, December 7.

BCE Bell Ringers ~ Thank you Carey Liston for organizing students from BCE and SLE to perform at the Boulder Creek Christmas tree lighting last week.  Ms. Liston and the students volunteered their time to rehearse and perform for this fun community event.  Thank you to all for sharing your talents with our community!

Help Please! ~ Please make sure your students stay close to you during after school pick up.  We have many students who appear to be unsupervised playing on the equipment or running up the hills which is not safe and off limits.  We want to make sure all our BCE Bears are safe and following the BCE Way.

Canned Food Drive ~ The Valley Christmas Project Canned Food Drive is up and running.  Please send in your non-perishable donations to help support families in our community.  This is a great opportunity for our children to discover the good feeling we receive when we do good things for others.

Empathy Quote of the Week :

"Good fiction creates empathy.  A novel takes you somewhere and asks you to look through the eyes of another person, to live another life."

                                                            ~ Barbara Kingsolver

Did you know???

School is your student's first and most important job.  They are learning more than reading and math.  They are learning how to show up for school on time every day, so that when they graduate and get a job, they'll know how to show up for work on time every day.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we continue to have assemblies and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. BCE has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

BCE PARENT CLUB EVENT & MEETING REMINDERS:

Holiday Gift Shift: We are gearing up for our Annual Gift Shift taking place all day on December 8 in the MP Room. This is a very special event where the MP Room is transformed into a store where kids can go shopping for their family members. Gift wrapping is provided on site. For this event to be a success we need donations of new or gently used items such as toys, book, stuffed animals etc.  Gifts for children to give to their parents or other primary caregiver are also needed, such as jewelry, purses, books, puzzles.... If you are interested in volunteering for this event please contact Kaytie Booth at kaytiebooth@gmail.com.  Donations are accepted up until the day of the event.

Family Dinner Night: There will be two family dinner nights in December! The first one is at the Red Pearl on December 5, with extended hours of 11 am - 10 pm!  This fundraiser will benefit the Science Program.

The second dinner night is at the Pizza and Pub and includes Trivia!  This will take place December 19 and proceeds benefit 4th grade. The times will be on the December calendar that should be going home with your child today.

Spiritwear: Spiritwear orders have arrived and will be distributed early next week!  If you forgot to order or would like to purchase one as a gift, we do have some extra sizes in stock - first come, first served so act fast.  Payment can be remitted to the office by cash or check only.  Checks must be made out to BCE Parent Club.  Please contact Kat Gafford at misstrinam@gmail.com or Amber Jones at amber_g@sbcglobal.net.  All purchases are final!

Meetings:  We encourage you to attend the School Board meeting on Wednesday, December 6, 6-8 pm.  This date is also marked on the monthly take home calendar.

There is a School Site Council meeting on Monday, December 11, after school in the BCE library.  All are welcome to attend.

Our next parent club meeting is scheduled for Thursday, December 14, 6-8 pm in the BCE library.  Childcare is always provided.  We hope you can make it!

Yearbook: If you have pictures to share from Ice Cream Social, class field trips  or Family Science Night please share!  Create a log-in and upload your pix to: https://link.entourageyearbooks.com/welcome.asp?action=photos&yearbook_id=22741&guid=   Or email: bcepc.yearbook@gmail.com to get in touch.

Shopping that helps benefit BCE:  Shopping for holidays just got more rewarding!  It is easy to feel the spirit of giving when your purchases can equate to monetary benefits to our school.

Amazon Smiles:  Don't forget to shop Amazon Smiles for your holiday needs. If you haven't signed up simply go to www.smile.amazon.com to sign up for this program.  You do not have to have a student enrolled at BCE to sign-up so be sure to tell family and friends to sign-up too!  Please note that this does not work on the Amazon app on your phone!

Box tops: Please continue to collect those box tops!  We raised $300 from our first collection last month!  Congratulations to room 4, they won for most box tops collected and have earned a pizza party for their class!  The next box top deadline is Friday December 15.  The prize for the months of November/December will be determined and announced January 2018.  The blue collection sheet should go home today with the December calendar (also a blue handout).

Facebook: If you are on Facebook and haven't joined our Facebook group then sign-up by sending an email to bcepc.execs@gmail.com  This is a private group so members must be invited and have a student enrolled at BCE.  It is a great forum to ask questions, receive announcements and stay involved.

The Flyer Process for San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District is posted on the "home" page of the District website at www.slvusd.org.   The flyers and/or blurbs are no longer inserted into the school newsletters or distributed to the children.  The District is making an effort to reduce the amount of paper that is sent home with your child(ren) and is working together to streamline the newsletter so that you read about the most important information regarding your child's school.  The District has created a website where all of the approved flyers will be posted (Community Opportunity).
