BCE Bearmail 12/15/17

December 15, 2017

Dear BCE Families,

No School ~ Just a heads up that Winter Break will begin on a Friday this year.  The last day of school for 2017 will be next Thursday December 21, Friday December 22 is a school holiday.

Bryan Stow ~ We were lucky enough to have Bryan Stow join us again this week for another motivational assembly. Our students were able to hear Mr. Stow's important message and enjoyed getting to know him.  Bryan's courageous story and his anti-bullying theme made a big impact on many of our BCE Bears. The five important points that Bryan wanted to teach our students were:  Don't be a bystander, Be an up-stander, Speak up, Reach Out and help others, and Lead by example. If you or your student would like any additional information, please feel free to visit bryanstowfoundation.org

New empathy book ~ Last week at our Recognition assembly, each class was given a copy of Enemy Pie by Derek Munson.  Enemy Pie is a wonderful story of turning a best enemy into a best friend.  Please ask your student about what they learned from this wonderful story.  You may want to consider checking this fantastic book out from the library and sharing it as a family.

EXTENDED!  Science Fair ~ The BCE Science Fair application deadline has been extended to Thursday, December 21!  Please turn your completed applications in to the office, or fill out the online application form.  Online applications can be found at: http://bce.slvusd.org/student-activities/science-fair.

Empathy Quote of the Week :

"Empathy is the most mysterious transaction that the human soul can have, and it's accessible to all of us, but we have to give ourselves the opportunity to identify, to plunge ourselves in a story where we see the world from the bottom up or through another's eyes or heart."

~Sue Monk Kidd

Did you know???

Students who attend school regularly are more likely to graduate and find good jobs.  In fact, a high school graduate makes, on average, a million dollars more than a dropout over a lifetime.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we continue to have assemblies and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. BCE has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

The Flyer Process for San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District is posted on the "home" page of the District website at www.slvusd.org.   The flyers and/or blurbs are no longer inserted into the school newsletters or distributed to the children.  The District is making an effort to reduce the amount of paper that is sent home with your child(ren) and is working together to streamline the newsletter so that you read about the most important information regarding your child's school.  The District has created a website where all of the approved flyers will be posted (Community Opportunity).
