BCE Bearmail 3/16/18

March 16, 2018

Dear BCE Families,

State Testing ~ Our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students are scheduled to take the state assessment test (CAASPP) during the first two weeks of May.   Please click here to read a letter from our District that will provide you with important additional information about the Smarter Balanced Assessment.  Click here for a Spanish version.

Thank you! ~ A big thank you to the Gafford family and our BCE Parent Club for hosting a successful Family Movie Night.  These family events are always so fun and a great way to enjoy our BCE community.

Pennies for Patients ~ Pennies for Patients: The last coin has been counted, and the results are in!  As a result of us working together, our Pennies for Patients campaign was a big success.  We raised $1,506.22 towards helping the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society meet its goal of eliminating blood cancers forever.  Thank you so much for helping and encouraging your child to participate in Pennies for Patients

Passports ~ Please click here for information about a Saturday passport day tomorrow.  Click here for a Spanish version.

Walk-Jog-a-Thon ~ Sadly, due to the rain and poor field conditions, we had to postpone our annual BCE Walk-Jog-a-Thon.  Luckily, we had a back-up day planned and we'll try again on Friday March 30.

Lost & Found ~ Please come by and take a look at the Lost & Found.  There are dozens of jackets, sweatshirts and other clothing items just waiting to go back home!

Need Kindergarten? ~ Kindergarten registration for Fall 2018 is open.  Visit the BCE office to pick up a registration packet and sign up for a spot to attend one of our three Kindergarten orientations and tours.  Tours will take place at 9 am on March 22, April 24 and May 18.  To begin the registration process, please plan on bringing your child's Birth Certificate, Immunization Record and Proof of Residency with you.

Children must be five years old by September 1 in order to enroll in Kindergarten.  If your student has a September, October or November birthday you might be interested in our Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program.  For more information, please call the BCE office at 831-338-6413.

We're looking forward to your student joining our BCE learning community!

Absences ~ If your student will be absent from school due to illness, or for any other reason, please call the BCE Attendance Line at 831-338-2887.  Please call every day until your student returns and let us know how their recovery is going.

Empathy Quote of the Week :

"We have to teach empathy as we do literacy."

~ Bill Drayton

Did you know???

At the heart of good manners is a respect for oneself and others.  Good manners convey a sense of respect for the sensibilities of other people.  When you say, "thank you", you're taking the time to make the other person feel appreciated.  Saying "please" respects a person's right not to do what you've asked.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we continue to have assemblies and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. BCE has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

BCE PARENT CLUB EVENT & MEETING REMINDERS:

We are sad to have had to cancel the Walk/Jog for today but safety is our priority and we didn't want children running in the rain or on a slippery field! Our reschedule date is for Friday, March 30, 2018. On the bright side you have more time to collect those pledges! If you need another sheet there are extras in the office. Donations will now be due April 13th. We are accepting water donations in the front office. If you are available the day of and want to help please e-mail Kat at misstrinam@gmail.com. This is always a fun event and if you are able to take some time out of your work day to watch and cheer the students on they absolutely love it.

Yearbook order forms have gone out! Orders are due April 30- no exceptions. Yearbooks are $20. Checks can be made out to BCE Parents Club. On that note, if you have any pictures from this year- Talent Show, Valentine's dance, field trips or any other events from throughout the year - please do not forget to send them to our Yearbook staff.

CALENDAR UPDATE!  DUE TO UNFORESEEABLE CIRCUMSTANCES, THE SILENT AUCTION WILL NOT BE AT SCOPAZZI'S THIS YEAR - APRIL 14, 5-9 PM. The event WILL take place at the Carnival, Saturday, May 12 as it has been in years past. If you have a donation to give you can contact the Parent Club at bcepc.execs@gmail.com

Special thanks are due to Laurel Johnson, as she is the person making sure our Carnival is happening on Saturday, May 12. She can't do this alone - we need all the volunteers we can get, so please set aside an hour to help run a booth and plan on enjoying the Carnival with your family. If you are interested in being more involved, please contact us at bcepc.execs@gmail.com.

Facebook: If you are on Facebook and haven't joined our Facebook group then sign-up by sending an email to bcepc.execs@gmail.com  This is a private group so members must be invited and have a student enrolled at BCE.  It is a great forum to ask questions, receive announcements and stay involved.

The Flyer Process for San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District is posted on the "home" page of the District website at www.slvusd.org.   The flyers and/or blurbs are no longer inserted into the school newsletters or distributed to the children.  The District is making an effort to reduce the amount of paper that is sent home with your child(ren) and is working together to streamline the newsletter so that you read about the most important information regarding your child's school.  The District has created a website where all of the approved flyers will be posted (Community Opportunity).
