BCE Bearmail 3/2/18

March 2, 2018

Dear BCE Families,

Thank You! ~ On behalf of our entire staff I want to thank our Parent Club and all the families that participated in making Staff Appreciation week so special for us.  The decorated classroom doors reminded the staff every morning as they arrived that they were entering a room where the families appreciated and supported them.  The daily treats were enjoyed by the entire staff and the lunch at Scoppazzis was beyond compare!  Additionally, there were flowers, cards and gifts that surprised and delighted many staff members.  BCE is such a special place.  Thank you for this outpouring of love and support, it means so much to all of us!  We are so very lucky to be working with such amazing students and families.

Read Across America aka Dr. Seuss Day ~ Oh the books that we read!  Many of our classes today took some time to honor Dr. Seuss and his contribution to our love of books and reading.  Several classes today enjoyed a special visit from our District SRO, Deputy Kris Koenig, who read my personal favorite, Green Eggs and Ham.

Spring Pictures ~ Spring Pictures will take place on Tuesday here at BCE.  All students will get their picture taken and there is no need to pay for pictures unless you decide to buy them after you see the proof.

Need Kindergarten? ~ Kindergarten registration for Fall 2018 is open.  Visit the BCE office to pick up a registration packet and sign up for a spot to attend one of our three Kindergarten orientations and tours.  Tours will take place at 9 am on March 22, April 24 and May 18.  To begin the registration process, please plan on bringing your child's Birth Certificate, Immunization Record and Proof of Residency with you.

Children must be five years old by September 1 in order to enroll in Kindergarten.  If your student has a September, October or November birthday you might be interested in our Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program.  For more information, please call the BCE office at 831-338-6413.

We're looking forward to your student joining our BCE learning community!

New Empathy book ~ At our monthly recognition assembly on Wednesday, classes received their latest book, Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts.  This wonderful book tells the story of a young boy who realizes what he has is worth more than what he wants.

Family Movie Night ~ I hope you can join us for a BCE Family Movie Night next Friday March 9.  Doors to the MP will open at 6 pm and the movie (Coco) will begin at 6:30. There is no cost for the movie and there will be baked goods available to purchase to the 5th grade Science Camp fund.

College Savings ~ Please join me on March 15 as we meet with families from SLVE and SLVMS to hear from a local Financial Planner about the advantages of early college planning.  Click here to see the flyer that will provide you with additional information.  I hope to see you there!

SLVUSD Charter Information Night: Hybrid/Home School Programs:  SLVUSD Charter School is hosting an Information Night on Tuesday, March 13 at the SLV Middle School Library (second floor) from 5:30-7:00 pm. Click here for a copy of the flyer. Questions regarding Charter Information Night? Email Danelle Matteson at dmatteson@slvusd.org or call 831-336-5167 or 831-335-0932

Absences ~ If your student will be absent from school due to illness, or for any other reason, please call the BCE Attendance Line at 338-2887.  Please call every day until your student returns and let us know how their recovery is going.

Empathy Quote of the Week :

"The main tenant of design thinking is empathy for the people you are trying to design for.  Leadership is exactly the same thing - building empathy for the people that you're entrusted to help."

~ David M Kelley

Did you know???

Lessons that our teachers create and present in class cannot be duplicated by completing worksheets or pages in a textbook.  When your student misses time from class they are not receiving the quality experience they have with our outstanding staff.

Thank you for supporting your student by getting them to school every day and on time!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

The BCE Way:  BE RESPECTFUL, BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we continue to have assemblies and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. BCE has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

BCE PARENT CLUB EVENT & MEETING REMINDERS:

Thanks to all of you for making this past week a special week for staff appreciation week. Special thanks to New Leaf for providing the grab and go breakfast bars on Tuesday, Jenna Sue's for generously donating the coffee bar for staff this Friday and Dessert First for providing their one-of-a-kind coffee cake! Shout out to Kristin Ghbeish and Karen Hoogner for doing a homemade jams and homemade breads for the staff on Thursday. The staff really enjoyed the week's surprises from doors, to flowers, to class gifts and we are grateful to the classroom coordinators who helped it all happen. We have an exceptional staff at BCE and it is always a highlight to be able to spoil them to let them know how much we appreciate all of them!

The March calendar should have been sent home with your student this week. There is a change already! The dinner night will take place on Tuesday March 13, rather than Wednesday March 7. It will be at Casa Nostra (plus Tapp BBQ and pub menu) and 15% of the profits will got to the BCE music program. We apologize for any confusion and hope you are able to attend! While you are there, join us for the Carnival kick-off meeting. It will be at Casa Nostra on Tuesday March 13 at 6 pm.

The March calendar also shows our next Parent Club meeting which is Thursday March 8 at 6 pm in the BCE library. Join us to discuss upcoming events and ways to get involved. Childcare is provided.

Movie night is the night after our Parent Club meeting, Friday March 9. The movie we are showing is Coco! We will begin at 6 pm. A food truck will be available. This event is free admission and popcorn and water will be provided while supplies last. Juice and bake sale available for purchase with proceeds to benefit 5th grade science camp.

We are just weeks away from the Walk/Jogathon! The shirts have arrived and many of you have already said you would like to help. Currently we are accepting water donations in the front office. If you are available the day of (March 16) and want to help, please email Kat at misstrinam@gmail.com. This is always a fun event and if you are able to take some time out of your work day to watch and cheer the students on, they absolutely love it.

Calling all volunteers! We are currently looking for a Carnival Chair or co-chairs.  Your role would be to oversee the details as there are already committee leads in place! If you like to be in charge, are detail-oriented and interested in helping, then you are perfect for the job! This is our most widely attended event and biggest fundraiser of the year. If you are interested in helping to plan this event contact us right away. This year the event will take place on Saturday, May 12, 2018, 10 AM-3 PM. E-mail us at bcepc.execs@gmail.com

The Cutesy Cupcake fundraiser in Scotts Valley was a big success!  We received 20% of profits = $75.  Cutesy Cupcake generously matched that for a total of $150!  Thank you to those of you who were able to attend and help make it a sweet success!

Yearbook order forms have gone out!  Orders are due April 30 - no exceptions.  Yearbooks are $20.  Checks can be made out to BCE Parents Club.  On that note, if you have any pictures from this year - Valentine's dance, field trips or any other events from throughout the school year - please do not forget to send them to our yearbook staff.

The Flyer Process for San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District is posted on the "home" page of the District website at www.slvusd.org.   The flyers and/or blurbs are no longer inserted into the school newsletters or distributed to the children.  The District is making an effort to reduce the amount of paper that is sent home with your child(ren) and is working together to streamline the newsletter so that you read about the most important information regarding your child's school.  The District has created a website where all of the approved flyers will be posted (Community Opportunity).
