BCE Bearmail 5/20/16

May 20, 2016

Dear BCE Families,

BCE Carnival ~ Another successful Carnival and Silent Auction is behind us!  What a fun and exciting day it was.  Thank you to our families who attended the Carnival and bid on items from the Silent Auction. A big THANK YOU goes out to Laurel Johnson, Nicole Berridge, Tammy Schultz, Theresa Brees and all our families who donated their time and energies to working before, during and after the big day to make it such a success.

Speech Contest ~ Our annual BCE speech contest was held today and as always it was a huge success.  There were thirteen 5th graders who spoke on the theme of, "I Am a Life-Long Learner."  Their speeches were heart-felt, inspiring and it was evident that a lot of thought and care was put into their work.   A special thank you to Mrs.Branson for coordinating our 21st annual speech contest and congratulations to all participants.

I'd like to recognize our top four finishers:

1.    Ethan Seitz

2.    Emma Defosset

3.    Jamie McLean

4.    Lila Arrasjid

Well done!

Band Festival ~ I hope many of you had the opportunity to go to the band festival on Tuesday.  What an amazing group of musicians we have in our District.  Thank you Carey Liston for providing such a great foundation for the students at BCE!

Many of our 4th and 5th grade students also performed for parents and students on Wednesday.  We enjoyed songs that included ukuleles, xylophones, boom whackers and fantastic vocals.  Thank you to our teachers and Ms. Liston in supporting our students to be able to share their musical talents!

SLVUSD School Board ~ Longtime SLVUSD School Board member, Lea Dakota, has retired after 12 years of dedicated service to our schools and students.  Ms. Dakota represented Area 5 (Felton/Lompico/Zayante).  The District will be taking applications until May 27th for any person interested filling this vacancy.  Please see the attached press release for more information about Ms. Dakota's service to SLVUSD and the Board application process.

Important Registration Information ~ All students currently enrolled in one of our SLVUSD schools should have already received an email from Gail Heagerty, our Student Information System and Database Specialist; the subject line was "New Annual Student Online Registration."

All annual student online registrations need be submitted by the parent/guardian no later than Friday, June 17.  After this date the system will be locked and you will not be able to access the registration system until mid August.

If you have already updated your student's registration information, THANK YOU!  If you did not receive or do not remember if you received the email, please search your emails for anything sent by:  gheagerty@slvusd.org.  If you did not receive the email we probably have an incorrect or outdated email for you.  Please contact our registrar Alma Steinberg.  Alma will be able to correct your email in our system and get you the information necessary to update your student's information.

Kindergarten Registration ~ Our final kindergarten tour and registration day of the year is scheduled for next Thursday, May 27th at 9:00 am.  At 2:00 pm that same afternoon there will be a visitation in a kindergarten class.  The tour and registration time are for adults only, but next year's kindergartners are welcome to come to the visitation at 2:00 pm.  If you have not signed up for the tour and/or visitation, please do so by calling our registrar, Alma Steinberg (338-6413).  It is not necessary to sign up in advance for either event, but it does help us to know an approximate number of people we can expect.

Please feel free to share this information with families you know that will have a kindergarten aged student for next school year.

Family Survey ~ It's that time of year again!  Please take a moment to complete our Family Survey.  The information we receive from the survey guides us in our plans for next school year.  Thank you for your time.  link

Student Lunch Card Accounts ~ The following is a message from our Student Nutrition Service Department (SNS):

To Parents/Guardians....

As of May 2nd, the Cafeteria will no longer allow meals on credit for the remainder of this school year. If your student has a negative meal account balance please have them pay the balance due at any cash register during any meal service. If your student pays for their meals in full they will need to have money on their account or payment with them to make their purchase. This is done every school year in an effort to clear negative accounts.

Upcoming Dates to Remember

·       Wednesday 6/8 = NO Early Out (regular dismissal time for all grades)

·       Thursday 6/9 = Last Student Day, Early Dismissal (K = 11:50, 1st – 5th = 12:15)

Quote of the Week (Courage)

Did you know???

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that you teach your kids healthy habits. You can help your students develop skills to make safe and healthy choices every day. These include fastening seat belts, wearing helmets, applying sunscreen, brushing teeth, washing hands, forming healthy relationships, and more. Make safe and healthy choices every day to show kids how to do it.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!
